    OK guys...
I'm planning on putting in a new starter tomorrow (Saturday) on my '87 GT-S auto. Whats involved? Do I have to remove the exhaust? Can I do it from below easier?
Are there amy pics, diagrams, hints, tricks, magic, tutorials, etc. already posted on this wonderful site?

It would be easier to remove the exhaust manifold. Pull the few bolts/nuts from the bottom where it connects to the mid pipe, pull the nuts off the manifold and go from there.

I would advise heat and/or PB blaster to loosen them up. When you park it soak the shit out of the bolts and nuts then you should be able to get them out easily in the morning.

You can remove it without taking of the exhaust manifold on a 3sge.

    1) dis connect your battery **** this is critical as the starter has a permanently live 12 volt cable (not tiny wire) bolted to it going right to the 12v terminal of your battery
    2) the 2 bolts 14mm that hold the starter in place will be above the clutch slave cylinder since you have an auto look above the front engine mount
    3) if your starter has a heat shield attached to it you will need to remove the heat shield 1 10mm bolt
    4) 2 wires to disconnect on the starter one is a plug type and one is 12 volts from the battery that is attached with a nut I think 10mm maybe 12mm

You should now be able to remove your starter

If you dis connect your exhaust you should use new gaskets
the starter replacement itself requires no gaskets

I went ahead and orderd the new exhaust gaskets and the small one for the EGR sincre I susspect a slight leak so I'll take care of that and the starter at the same time.
