I thought for sure when i bought my car that it had a 5sfe. Then when i go on ebay used engines that match the looks of mine say its a 3sfe. On the forums homepage it doenst have the option of 5sfe but it does have a 3sfe but it doesnt look like my engine. So i am confused. My engine is slow as balls and leaks and i want to build a second in my spare time and when the time is right swap the engines. So i will have a freshly rebuilt engine in hopes that it will regain some of its lost glory and maybe power. Maybe add some lil treats to add maybe 5psi of boost or Nitrous oxide for looks. But i need clearification on exactly what it is internet is confusing me. Maybe we can get an updated Post with pics of all the motors and there specs and make it a sticky. So what the fuck is it?
ST162s didn't come with the 5SFE. ST184s and others did though. Maybe the reason for the lack of power is the type of engine it self... 3SGTE FTW! (or at least 3SGE)
yessir its a 3sfe. just like in my camry. usdm 4th gens had 3SFE exc. GTS with 3SGE and 88-89 alltrac with 3SGTE. Look on the bright side.... fuel economy! Jk. If you want to be absolutely sure, move the cruise control actuator and take a look at the timing cover. Big bold letters will tell you whats up without doubt.
same motor as I have, 3sfe. You must have a hood from a gt-s (3sge). The plate on your throttle body should say EFI, but it's missing. For your reference, you can check out the vaccum diagram from my car here: http://st162.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=731 -K
yours is an 89 right? if you do searches for 89 celicas it will come up with the st18X series for some stupid ass reason. ebay gets confused as hell. i have an 89 and had to tell a clutch shop it was an 88 so that they ordered the right parts. they thought i had the 5sfe in my car. that would not have been cool!
What benefit would that bring? I jts really want to build a new motor that maybe it can retain it glory.. And retain oil......
This is why its confusing. MIne loks like this http://www.usedjapanmotors.com/modelimg ... el_299.JPG This is a 3sfe according to these guys.. http://www.usedjapanmotors.com/modelimg ... el_298.jpg
Your's doesn't look like the top one - mafix is right, it's not a 3 series. It's also not an S block either - it's an A block. If it was in a car you could tell, they sit vertical instead of slanted back. That's either a 5afe or 7afe. They were common in 5th gen Celica ST amoung others (Corolla motor). I have to disagree with the 5sfe, that looks like a later model 3sfe, not sure if we got them here.
i will double check the plate. Some are removed. BUt i will look at the engine cover on the left side.
Why would you do that? For all the time and effort it would take, it would be far simpler to just swap in a 3SGE, and get more power with only a slight decrease in fuel economy.
