doesnt look like has been covered before im keen to put a short shifter in my celica ive noticed there are a few for newer models and also some MR2s on the the aussie ebay, does anyone know if these will fit the older models? if not how have ppl gona about making their own short shifter? pics would be great cheers
this has been covered, for a DIY short shifter go to the interior/exterior archives i believe it is. if you just wanna buy one twm performance sells them. http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshif ... ifters.htm
but my question itself hasnt been covered... its hard to find parts for these cars in australia,so chances are there are parts from other models that may fit the st162 no chance im buying a short shifter from overseas all good though, ill just have a go at the DIY. cheers
the DIY is prob the cheapest. allblackalltrac had a later gen celica shifter in his celica when i saw him but i forget what year, and i have no idea how he did it. it wasnt a shorter stick just a shorter throw. pm him, maybe he will tell u.
yeah i just saw theres a DIY for a short shift and for a short throw, id be happy with the shorted shifter for now which just means slipping the stock top extension off and fitting an aftermarket gear knob
I have the TWM shortshifter and am very happy with it, totally not comparable with a DIY one where you cut off a few inch...they're not too expensive, do the job right !
mate as i said, there are fuck all aftermarket parts for these cars in australia lol and im not that keen to order one from overseas. so sadly ill have to live with the quick DIY job theres a few short shifters on ebay in aus for the later model celicas, but thats it http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TOYOTA-SHORT...ryZ43807QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
A quick and dirty solution is to cut downt he shifter, I took a couple inches off mine and it really shorted the shifts, I can switch gears just using my fingers, and the distance they can move.
I agree... I cut about 2-3" off my shifter and it definetly lessons the amount you need to move the shifter...
there was a real post i think it used to be in the garage part of this site i did it, even moved the throw ball up the stick and cut off a couple inches i love it i had to put washers below the shifter housing and take a zip cut to it to accomodate the bottom around it heres a pic and ill try and find the link \
I just used an aftermarket shift knob. YOu can always cut the 2 inch section otu of the middle and weld the top w/ the threads back on.
It's a momo that has 3 allen key's that screw into the shifter arm and it's never came loose on me....you can use loc-tite if you're worried about it coming loose anyway but I've had no problems.
i had a look at mine , didnt come with a like top sleeve u guys get that you can take off , is mine just factory low ? because it is jap
The knob I bought isn't threaded either, it attaches the same way rye described. Mine loosens up once in a while so I need some locktite stuff or whatever. It's a little shorter with the knob, but by no means a short-throw. I haven't got around to hacking the shaft down yet, but I assume it would make it feel like there's less reach involved when shifting. -K
cheers for the reply guys. yeh i figured the knobs where the screw on type which is why i was curious bout them coming loose, but sounds promising! and also in terms of it being a short 'throw' shifter i also realise without modifiying the bottom shaft it will just be a shorter shifter, which is all im after soo ill grab grinder out on the weekend
I was thinking about hacking mine down for quite a while - the AM knob lowered it some but not much, maybe that's all you need? Obviously hacking is quite permanent, not sure if you really want to go there when there's no going back? Anyway, this week I said f-it and hacked a bunch off, not as much as Rye did tho. It's much more comfortable now with less reach involved, but a tad tougher to shift since the other 1/2 of the mod isn't done. Took her for a spin right afterwards and boy did it ever feel wierd almost to the point where reget was starting to set in. After a day or so, I'm getting used to the difference, but IMO it's basically just a tease for the real deal. -K
Definetly doesn't have the feel of a "real" short shifter...but it's a hell of an improvement over the factory length.... It's all personal preference though.....how high you sit in the car...how far away from the shifter..how long your arms are....
