So now my DD is finaly alive again after a bunch of bad luck but even worse happened. When i started her up i noticed white smoke coming out of the exhaust and it got worst as i drove her a little. But i took her on deliveries last night and the white smoke seemed to go away for the most part. Now my question is, is it normal for a car to smoke after a rebuild? She got better the more i drove her and she really doesn't seem to be smoking much anymore. Im just worried that something else happened....
My only experience in engine building is chevy v8 but nonetheless... I dont really know what all you did but alot of times the will be a bit of smoke as the rings get seated. If you did a complete overhaul on a 5s I assume you at the very least honed cylinders and used new rings. This may be all you are seeing. Did you check for head warp? Always a good way to ruin your day. Propper sequencing and torque on the head? Made sure the valve seats and guides were good? Just a few of the basics to check. If it seems to be going away I'd bet the rings are just getting seated.
The white smoke is oil in the top of the pistons. It should burn out, as you drive it more. The spark will actually cause it to evaporate. You might notice it for a few days, but it should dissipate as you drive it. Also, make sure you torqued the head down to the specs, and the valve cover.
