So, i have small rust spots around the front of my hood. And some caked on bird poop THe previous owner had it garage stored for 4 years. So he says... There was a scratch on the drivers side door/rear quarter panel which he re-painted (spray can) So i'm planning to re-spray the whole car (spray can). After i get the rust/paint damages cleaned up. Can't really afford to get it professionally done.. So! What would be my best bet to remove small rust spots? a fine grit sand paper? And do i have to remove ALL the old paint, or can i just re-paint over it? Thanks.
If you really don't care and you're just rattle canning it anyway then no you don't have to sand the whole car, just make sure it's clean... If you don't get rid of all that rust...it will probably show again within a year... But...yeah, for the bird poop and small rust spots wet-sanding it should be fine... In all honesty your paint doesn't look that bad for how old these car's are...you could wet sand those bird poop spots and get some rubbing compound to buff it back to a shine...
i use rust paint to cover over places that have rusted. Its not as good as sandblasting off all the rust and painting fresh overtop. But ive found it works good to inhibit the rust from continuing to grow
Mmm, rust paint. The rust is not so bad right now though, i think i should wet sand it out before it can get worse. Question: Since i have like a few dot sized rust spots, maybe from a untreated rock chip of some sort. If i sand these spots down and paint over it then buff/clean it up. Think it would stick out like a sore thumb? It will be just black on black so.. Meh. Or i can spray can the whole car... This is the drivers side door that had been touched up by the previous owner.
