Hi guys. My 86 GT-S started to have rough idling problem. It only does that if I drive it for a while ,15 - 20 min. or more, then turn the engine off for another 10 - 15 minutes. When I try to turn it on it either turns on and feels like it idles around 500 RPM off or it just shut itself off. However if the wait time is shorter ,around 5 min, or more ,20 - 25 min., it starts up without any problem. I took it to mechanic shop and they said alternator might be the problem however they are not sure either. Do you guys have any ideas ?
Done anything to it lately? This is why I keep a spare AFM, T/B, coil & distributor - could be any of these. Could also be plugs or a bad injector and I once had the same problem with a coil that was old and overheating - took a while to find that one If you have any parts or have a friend's car handy, try swapping bits to isolate the problem. The shutting off could be the coil, plug gaps too small or the AFM not set correctly (loose flap spring?). that's my hunch & where I'd start looking as well as the rotor and cap condition. Can't see an alternator causing idling and shutdown issues :bs
Not really. I purchased the car in September or October and the previous owner changed the timing belt the day that I bought it. As far as I know that was the most updated change on the car. The car sat more than a year before I bought it. I don`t really have any friends with who have Celicas in fact I don`t even have friends here yet ops We just moved to San Diego like a few months ago and so far the only people that I know are the people that I work with Plugs etc. all changed before I bought it but I don`t know if the car sat more than a year after they changed them or they changed them before I bought it. I should have asked that question.
I agree, that's :bs Did he do the timing belt,......... contact him and have a chinwag and go from there.
celica's can still run without a battery but its very bad for the alternator.... so i cant see it being that. seafoam the SHIT out of that bad boy
I agree with the boys: it's not the alternator. If it's rough on re-start, I'd start with the basics, like checking all the big and small air tubes from the AFM to the throttle body (TB). An air leak will cause rough idle. Again, like some of the guys mentioned, clean out the TB. Funny, I have the same problem on my 86GTS and I'm wondering if it's a cold start injector issue. It depends on how long it sits after shut off. That's why I think it has something to do with temp sensors on the cold start injector.
First I will need to figure out how to do that :sad Same as above... Don`t know how to do it but I am trying to find more sources. Also searching the forum
Lets see who is going to figure it out first. If its me I will definitely update you. If you figure it out first please let me know
I'm interested in learning thanx Sean, opcorn....... I'm sure that after 20 years mine could use a good clean.
I just came across this video on youtube and wanted to share with you guys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1ZC9pisybg&feature=fvwp&NR=1
Interesting vid Zeb........ I never heard of this............ it may be handy for less baked on carbon............. I'm curious to hear what the lads think :munch
be carefull with the seafoam. you can hydrolock the engine. i almost did it to my land cruiser! pour very very slowly! -i might do it to my celica if the engine wasnt new, but would never do it to the cruiser again. im not sure i want to find out how much a replacement 2uz-fe is.
I'v done plenty of googling on seafoam and it seems that if used properly it might be fine...................... Hydrolock = bent conrods hnoes
change your fuel filter first......then clean your throttlebody....its pretty simple to clean and i did mine in about a minute.
