Nice work and good idea with the Polk speaker bolt-ins. Make sure your rear windows are sealed up good or you may get water filling up your rear speaker boxes. I also re-wired my 86GTS stereo harness to be compatible with the 87, 88 and 89 plugs.

Rear speaker boxes. Guessing that's a hatch thing? Either that or mine are missing.

Well, I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger and picked up a complete 5SFE out of a 90 Celica today. Got it from a local yard and it has a 101 day warranty, so hopefully this engine is good. It better be for what I paid... Anyone know of any issues I may run into putting this in? I know all of the details for putting my head on it, but I've been reading that some engines use smaller or larger flywheel bolts than others? Anyone know what that's all about? I already have a full gasket set and timing belt on the way, and I'd love to pound this out this weekend. Any input would be much appreciated.

I've noticed. 'Tis a shame. They look so much better! ;)

Definitely. All of my friends keep telling me I should have gotten a hatch, but I love the lines of the coupe.

    Hi Panda,
I've been following your exploits from afar (So Calif) and am very pleased with your results thus far...
My car (The Burpcar) is also a GTS coupe, that I inherited a few years back and has been a reliable daily driver ever since crankin out about 2300 miles a month on a car getting ready to turn 195,000 miles this week.
Keep up the good work on your engine swap. I know what potentials these cars have firsthand cause I recently checked out the SoCal White Lightening coupe with Beams of Joe in Fontucky, errr Fontana.

Thanks for the kind words! That car has to go pretty good. I've still never been in a good running GT-S! Even with new injectors my car was still noticeably down on power. I'm hoping that will all be sorted when I get the 5SGE all together. Speaking of, that is almost finished, and I've been slacking on an update...

Yeah everybody's pretty much waiting with baited breath for an update.
I don't think that my GTS is really running good because my TVIS has always had a bad diaphragm...I think that the previous owner wired it open all the time. HALOLHA

Okay, big update coming soon, but in the meantime.... IT LIVES AGAIN!

I ended up picking up a parts GT-S coupe, with a bad timing belt and rusted to hell, for essentially nothing. Swapped a new belt on, and it ran smooth as butter and had great compression. I ended up pulling that block out, stripping it bare, and replacing everything. New bearings, oil pump, water pump, timing set, and all new gaskets and seals, a long with a TON of cleaning. All OEM Toyota parts, of course. I also added on a 5SFE oil cooler setup, with some creative plumbing so everything would clear the block side starter on the S53.The engine leaked from nearly every seal before, and was covered in about a half inch of caked on oil and dirt. It took HOURS. I also opened and resealed the trans since it had a small leak from the bottom. But now all is well, and it's back in the car and running strong. I finally know what a proper running 3SGE is like. :D

Pics, and more on the entire process to come as soon as I have some real time!
