On the weekend i picked up a bunch of random parts for free. One of the items was a drop in k&n filter. Other than it being reusable i cant really see any advantage. Looks like after a descent clean it should look brand new. Just debating putting it in as 1.I cant picture and performanc benefits aside from better filtration and 2. The fact my AFM will then be sucking in oil and il have to clean that out more regularly. Any thoughts? im not really fussed considering it cost me nothing cheers
Your AFM shouldn't suck oil if you do it properly? The trick is to wash them, oil them and squeeze all the oil out - the remaining oil film catches dust etc This type of filter has been used on bikes for the last ? years, bikes make heaps more power/displacement ratio (200bhp/L) those guys wouldn't fit them if they didn't work K&N is a reputable brand well loved by racers all over the world
geez Jon, i thought moderators were sposed to be helpful haha[/quote:hzqbtzc6] i was helpful, you asked and i answered lol.... its a filter, ment to filter crap out of the air. if the world was perfect you wouldnt need it... but its not. your stock filter will do just as good, it just has a restricted airflow do to the path from outside airflow to the airbox. a cone filter is not restricted, theres no real performance gain cause its a god damn filter.... i have used all kinds k&n, elcheapo brand, and stock. the difference i noticed, stock was 40 bucks cheaper. but since you got it for free.. sure slap er' on...
i would agree with jon on this one. i have a drop in k&n filter and i notice no difference. Maybe a little better gas millage over the months of use, but nothing that I would spend the extra 40 on again for. However, they are reuseable, which is why I got it. much cheaper than 15 bux over and over again, or more. and you get that way nifty sticker to put on your box so people think you have something that really is nothing. hahaha
Actually you agreed with me, you said it yourself: ??? - It's running better already! Filter companies pay people to say stuff like that & it's already saving you money in fuel and filters If you tuned it and fitted bigger injectors, the power would have increased - and your consumption would be more or less stock. You can't bolt on a filter and expect more power without re-tuning and re-jetting the motor? Only time that applies is when a motor is already running rich - stock 3S's aren't Cone filters? - http://www.st162.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=3363
165s alway seem to run rich stock, I agree that a panel filter in stock housing is a good compromise. K&N is a good make, the main difference I find between OEM panel filters and aftermarket ones is really the shelf life of the filter. I find it does not take long to clog up OEM ones.
the reason k&n flows more air, is simple. it doesnt filter as much crap out. so the small increase in fuel mileage is not worth pulling a few years of the life of the engine imo.
Poor servicing, rough engine use from cold, poor quality oil, corrosive terrain, labouring an engine, runing an engine to hot or to cold etc would all have a far greater effect on engine wear than swapping to a performance panel filter. I have seen recorded dyno tested back to back gains of up to 5 bhp from performance filters fitted in standard air boxes. Better design, better materials etc count, its just not as simple as saying they flow more because they filter out less. OEM filters are designed and produced to a cost price. All filters are designed to trap debris, so need cleaning / replacing. I dont subscribe to the fit and forget mentality for a air filter, my blitz one has been cleaned each time I do a major service. The debate on air filters is endless, , but a free K&N filter, I see as a good thing.
i see k&n like snap on, you pay for the name, my snap on sockets that are 200 + for a standard set. snap just as easy as the cheapest of the cheap from crappy tire. they have the same warranty, hell the same case. its more on personal preference. .
woohoo ask a question start a debate hehe Personally i agree with Jon its the name you pay for more than anything, i once saw a test in some magazine where they compared 10 different brand Pod Filters ranging from K&N to real el cheapo. Results K&n 1st in filtration 9th in performance 2nd cheapest (JA Racing or some crap it had a bright yellow top) 2nd in filtration No.1 in performance And im sure as hell not gonna be buying bigger injections and tuning it to try and get 10-20 more HP with a free filter haha ok il chuck it in at best im hoping for a little bit extra mileag, thanks guys
At least now you're making an informed decision? I think it's more a case of paying more for quality, there's a lot of junk out there Tools are another can of worms, Snap-on is too expensive outside USA I don't think one tool supplier has it all anyway, I use different brands for different types of tools but the same applies re quality
