i have an 88 gt that is intermittently overheating. sometime it will jump up to red and stay and others it will jump up and then cool off really quick and other times it wont quite get to half temp. i have checked coolant level several times and its fine. any suggestions are great! thanks!

Check your thermostat and water pump.

Does it overheat when idling only, or when the vehicles moving?

    sounds like a thermostat.

Thermostat is definetely a posibility, water pump is doubtful its strictly a mechanical device
driven off the timing belt. The only problem your likely to have with that is a failing bearing
    and leak.

I would also check that the fan is working properly

after you checked all those problems do pressure test I think your cyl-head gasket as gone for a ride or cracked cyl head let's hope not

could be a crack in the head, but if so then it would just overheat......been there before......check the therm and hoses.....plus the fan.

thanks for the help will check all that out when i get home. if it is the head gasket then i will probably end up rebuilding the entire engine (rings are bad so it burns some oil and smokes a bit.). how much would it cost to do a total overhaul of the engine? it has 142k miles on it...what should i expect. is there anything that i can go without replacing to cut cost? just had a baby so i'm really on a budget when it comes to cars.

when it comes to engine rebuilding.....you dont want to cut cost......you can by buying just oem and not modding the entire motor.

if you cut corners you will more than likely suffer for it down the road.

then less then 800 i would estamiate...but then you have to trust your own job....ive never done one myself......had the hg and the head replaced by a shop....thats just me....plus i didnt have another car to drive when it went.....if it happened now i would do it.

-wait, wait, wait.......what are we talking about here? try the thermostat first and like dave said make sure the fans are working properly. these are both inexpensive easy fixes. IF and i say IF that doesnt solve your issue then you should start looking else where.

-if the h.g. was blown you'd know it. coolant loss, bubbles in the coolant, white smoke, ect. . cracked head? maybe i guess, that could present itself in all kinds of wierd ways, but i wouldnt think something as small as this wouldnt be it.

-IF somehow someway, there is damage to the head. a full head teardown/rebuild with 3 angle grind ect cost me $250 at a good shop. this meant all i had to do was bolt it back on. i have a brand new h.g. i will give you if needed.

    -start small then work up.

I know I am just wanting to rebuild eventually. I did get a bit off subject though. I think it was my fan. I think the relay or fuse may have been loose but its not overheating anymore.

-you guys were starting to scare me.

-mine was $1500. this included bored, honed, decked, balanced with flywheel/pressure plate, new pistons, bearings, crank grind/polish, full head job, cams welded and ground, re-shim for the new cams, 3 angle grind, ect. basically "the works". head came assembled, and did the bottom myself (easy).

-i also did cometic gasket, arp studs, ats h/o oil pump. so +$500ish

-new complete gasket kit iirc $180.

-so $2200ish got me an uprgraded motor that should pretty much last forever. you could probably save $1000 bucks or more just to do a stock rebuild.

-and with all that extra money spent im not much over stock power. for all that i could have got a jdm gen 3 gte. but i also have alot less to worry about, and am less likley to get speeding tickets.

-the machine work is key. mine took 3mos. but the work is perfect. done in an "old school" shop.

-the one thing i read on another forum that i always keep in mind....something like this.
"you have 3 options. price, speed, quality. you only get 2"
    fast with good quality =$$$$
cheap and fast = shit work
    cheap and quality= long time.

That was this forum and it was me.

We offer 3 kinds of service.
    Good
    Fast
    Cheap

    You can choose any 2.
If its good and fast it won't be cheap.
If its good and cheap it won't be fast.

If its fast and cheap it won't be good.

Glad to hear the fan may have been the issue.

-haha, i have read that here, i swear in memory it was from like a mustang forum or something thou. i really like it.

-jebuz nate. i had my whole motor machined for less than that. i just had to put it back together. :D

edit: come to think of it i put a jdm ge in 09 for half that. you must really like the fe auto..... :help

Yes the lad definetely needs help. I tried to convince him of the merits of
a 3s-g(t)e or at least suggest how he could boost the power of his 3s-fe
but we may yet still have more work ahead of us.

well I wouldnt say I love the 3sfe.....but they are reliable for a dd.....plus i dont have gje cash or spare time to do a swap but believe me flatliners gonna get boosted......

and i made that gesture just clowning....come on dog how fucked up is u.....lol
