What the F--K!!! My car has a ton of power 257whp, weighs 2500lbs w/ me in it and am running BFG drag radials! My times suck! When I first ran the car last year, my best time was a 14.4- and that was letting off at the score board and spinning through 1st and 2nd! (scoreboard is a good bit shorter than the end of the 1/4mile!) I ran 15.2's and 15.4 today! WTF! :banghead I never leave 3rd gear in the 1/4, some Honda guys I was talking to were saying it has to be the tranny! They suggested changing the final drive gear! Is this possible on our trans? I know Mafix has said to use the 93+ Camry trans (i believe), is there anything else I could do? My car is FAST, but I can't prove it in the 1/4!
If you're still spinning through 1st and 2nd that's a good chunk of time there. Makes for an impressive burnout but don't mean sh*t in the quarter. Try putting a wheelie bar on and preloading it so the chassis and body can not roll backwards. That'll help apply some 'weight' to the front. Also try to avoid clutch dumps. I've noticed in my '87 GTS I'm quicker if I only run 1st gear up to about 3k (15-20mph), then let 2nd/3rd wind up to 7k.
The problem or problems I am having is- My car has 2 stage Nos! I can spin the wheels w/o nitrous no problem, I also have a 2-stage rev limiter. My nitrous works like this-(controlled through engine management) --When the switches are on, the fuel richens, and Nos comes on automatically if I am at WOT and preset RPM. The 1st stage comes on at 5k the 2nd I believe around 5500-6000rpm. I tried adjusting my rev limiter to 4500 (Honda guy suggested) I held pedal to floor on launch, dropped the clutch and then Nos came on and still spun. I also tried dropping at 7500rpm w/ Nos- just spinning! I think I need slicks! One kid I was talking too, was running a bubble (Civic hatch)- N/A, had 222whp, and weighed about the same! He had slicks and ran a 13, and 12.5! (first time ever racing-track or street) I have a lot more power and ran 15's!! God damn stock RSX Type S- running 14.5 and 15! (on street tires)
Could be differential gear ratio is the problem.... Honda guys probably running high 2's or low 3's... You may have to change ratios if you are running say 3.73's or lower....
I know less than nothing about gear ratios. I have a re-built '89 3S-GE 5spd trans. I believe S53. I know this box is good, so I want to know if there is a way to change the ratio for better drag times!
Stig and or Mafix would be the definitive ones on that issue. I know the diffs can be removed/replaced, but with what is where I fall off the wagon... :ack2
LSD is what you need. the final drive wont mean squat if you dont have an LSD all them V Tech hondas come with them as standard so they can get off the line easier and stop them geting torquesteer. your problem is your only spinnig one wheel, if you want to get an LSD but and a shorter drive, i think you should keep and eye out for a toyota celica ST202 beams gearbox, there a straight bolt up and they come with an LSD as standard and you will get the power to both wheels off the line and will be going much faster hope that helped!
hmmm... that changes everything, did you try using first till 2k and changine till 2 then maybe, if you have the power?
I tried setting the rev limit to 3500, don't remember exactly, but I think I spun. The problem is I never get enough runs, and the delay between them is sooooo long that I don't know what to try next. I am going to go to a track rental day. It will cost about $80, but they say you get 15-20 runs or more! Then I can actually try different rev limits, tire pressures, w/ or w/o Nos, w/ or w/o Nos at launch, and anything else I can think of.
I think that is going to be the end result too. I was hoping someone would have 5x100 wheels w/ slicks I could try, but most are 4x100. What size slicks can I run?
How about going 70% on the gas or something. Maybe you can try not to floor it from the beginning and control the gas just for the start. Then pick up and go 100% after some time. I'm betting it takes practice and knowledge of your own car, as each car is different. That or even stickier tires would help alot too. Or both even. Experiment
I am trying to control the gas by way of rev limiter. The 2-step is adjustable, I wired it to my cruise control accell switch. When i hold the switch the limit is on, i hold my foot to the floor and when the 2nd yellow hits the tree, i drop the clutch and when i hit 5k the Nos comes on! I just tried bringing the limit to 4500, maybe I should try like 3800.
On the track I run 15" 2000 Celica GT wheels, w/ drag radials on the front and just black and rounds on the back.
