My 86 Celica GTS does not have heated side view mirrors like the 87-89 ones. (Canadian Domestic Market)
Has anyone upgraded their 86 to accept this modification?

Huh, Canada didn't get heated side mirrors til '87? Both of my '86s have had them.

Probably a simple matter of going to a salvage yard and getting the mirrors and appropriate wires out of an 87-89 Celi.

only on GT-S , not on the basic versions. My 86 didn't have them as well, but missed a few other standard things as it was one of the first in the Netherlands and was sent out in a rush from Japan to the showroom :)

Of course all is upgraded now.... Should be plug and play, just look at your cabling in the door, 3 or 5(heated) conductors.

so is the heating element in the wires or is it in the mirrors? i am finally getting foding mirrors, not electric, but i dont care too much about that. cool extra feature and all, but i want to fold my mirrors in tight spaces. anyways i have an 89 with heated mirrors. will the new folding ones heat as well?

I'm guessing the heating element is in the mirror, or stuck to the back of it. Dunno, never took one apart.

Where'd you get the folding mirrors from, and how much? Also if you got them from Oz, no heating.

SR5Punk, no they wont heat. We never got them man...

How useful is it anyway? I wipe the ice off on cold mornings and they are fine for the rest of the day....

yeah i didnt think so. oh well. its not a necessity anyways. 86gtmonkey i am getting a set from davway. he lives in aus. getting the set of non-powered folding mirrors and the switch, i know its not needed but its coming with it i guess, for about $70 us. they looked like they were in great shape and he was kind enough to help me out. shipping is most of the price on that. but it will be a cool little add on eh? cant wait to get them!

And to scrape it off you would probably have to press so hard that the mirror would break right off the car. It was over 1/4" thick in some areas, IIRC it took me half an hour just to get the drivers door open. Heated mirror are pretty useful in cold climates.[/url]

oh man that is some scary shit. how do you even go about trying to defrost that? a heat gun? a hair dryer? a chisel?

I think I used hot water, because I didn't have any winter washer fluid. I got the door open, then the latch froze so it couldn't close. I think I drove it into the garage, or put an electric heater inside to melt the ice off.

I would imagine that if it has power windows then it is probably also wired for heated mirrors so you just need to replace the non heated mirror portion with a heated mirror.

Pry glass from mirror at the top of the housing in the middle (red arrow)

I think the easiest way to check is to look at the plug inside your door and see if it has 3 wires or 5 wires.

The only way to get the mirror appart is to pry the glass piece up. The above picture shows that it is attached to the power motor by a black ball on the mirror that snaps into a socket on the motor. The 2 white theaded posts snap into clips inserted into gears. In the above pic you can see some of the heater elements (red arrow)

Everything you ever wanted to know about power/heated mirrors

sweet. well since i think i have to replace the glass on the folding mirrors because they drive on the other side and it would take some getting used to that way, anyways then i can just take everything from my heated power mirrors in my car and just use the shells from the folding mirrors.

    Re: Heated side view mirrors

Winter up here, now I'm missing the heated mirrors.
Going to pick up a set tomorrow, but I have the 3-wiring harness, not the 5. Looks like I'll have to pull that out too.

    EDIT (15 Dec 2008):
I have 3-pin on the mirror side and 5-pin on the wiring harness side. That's good news :)

    Re: Heated side view mirrors

you could just add 2 wires and wire it into the defrost switch. since the mirror is different, i would assume the door harness is different, and then i would also assume the body harness is different. that's a bit of work for mirror defrosters.
