so, as most of you may know, my engine kick in the towel a few months ago. so i ended up getting rebuild done on her. i ran it in then the problems started coming lol (has nothing to do with the quality of the rebuild, just clearing that up :p)

first off the a/c kicked it in,
then the engine mounts were found to be split and are knocking when changing gears and when accelerating/decelerating,
then the rear of the oil pump started leaking oil onto the cv shafts and sprayed oil everywhere!,
then 2day, i went to get into my car and start her up. she started, choked and it sounded almost like a belt snapped or something so a mate and i got to work.

checked everything, fuel, air, spark, wiring, dizzy, everything you can think of we checked. then we checked to see if the rotor was spinning and it was. so we were stuck for a while. decided to take the timing cover off and check it was still intact (it was replaced during the rebuild so i assumed it last). got the cover off only to find the intake cam about 6 teeth out and the exhaust 1 tooth out. then i was looking around and it had caught a piece of the timing belt cover seal in the teeth and chewed it up..... causing it to jump teeth! so we fixed her up and put it all back together!

so finally got her going again, started first go! dont have a timing light and i suspect the timing to be out after all this....

but the main thing is shes going lol

that story will be really annoying to read cause i basically just typed and didnt put full stops in..... hahaha sorry guys and girls!

thats my day, missed uni... dont like my course anyway!

    ENJOY :D

Hahaha, i know exactly how you feel. I go to put my p/s pump on - $50, ends up i need a p/s rack and belt as well, which is going to cost over $600. I spend $75 for a new o2 sensor to get rid of the engine light, and then find out that its not the problem, and i need a new wiring loom instead. Also got the exhaust checked, and i need a new flex pipe and flange. And my car isn't even working at the moment thanks to the fuel pump breaking.

Its part of owning a car, which is a big pita! Sometimes i just think i should buy a newer model.

changed a timing belt that fast? how did you do it? as for timing, you can pic up a timing gun pretty cheap where i live, about 20-25 canadian dollars, i think it was a really good invetment for all the timing work i had to do for the etest

Timing Belt only takes 3-4 hours its more of a pita than hard.

Thats some bad luck man, but hey at least yours is hell immaculate and sexy as hell! What engine mods does yours have? I remember you getting good power out of it...with some tuning....wouldnt mind seeing some gains myself...

    haha what?

its been 1mm overbored. i got 130fwhp and that was before the engine rebuild! but i doubt it will be making any more than about 130, prob squeaze 135 outta her but that would be pushing it...

its running nice atm... gotta keep it that way since i dont have loads of cash laying around to fix her when she breaks down anymore!!

Thats the only mod? How can I start making that sorta power? Wana start roasting stock commodores haha. Though its still slow as hell haha, gona gut the cat and see if that helps!

a 1 mm overbore only raises the CC of the engine from 1998.xxxx to 2002.xxxx so displacement is still very similar. In Japan and Austrailia (some other places aswell) the 3SGE make 150-160 HP at the crank so 130 whp is about 156 crank HP. noone has ever been able to answer the real differnce between USDM and overseas engines at created this extra 20hp, id personally really like to know. THe lack of an EGR valve may help raise the numbers, but at WOT wide open throttle the EGR valve is off any only clean air is sucked into the engine so I dont see it making that much diferince. The Timing of the engines is different in Japan and asutralia, I dont know forsure what its set at but I remember reading JDM 3sge was 12 deg. timing vs the USDM's 10. Mafix can spot the differience between the JDM and USDM by something under the valve covers, I dont know exactly what. Also read that a USDM motor running on a JDM ECU is balls, I dont know if this is because the timing wasnt set to what the JDM ECU is use to or if there is internal differiences in the engines. I cant see the compression being differnt between the engines, as that woul dbe a major manufacturing PITA.

Last I saw I can get a JDM 3sge for $395 from an importor in toronto, if I can drop that in with a JDM ECU and have no wiring issues I think I may

I think the JDM motor has Yamaha cast into the head below the front valve cover. AUSDM runs 10 degrees timing too, and also has EGR. I remember alm an stating his made more power than a SSS pulsar with a nissan sr20de, which is supposed to be 105kw over here, and the celica 103kw. Thats why I asked. In any case, i reckon im getting bout 50kw lol.

hum, dan im didnt know ausie had EGR's, hum. If your injectors are working right, and your cat isnt cloged, it might be an ECU problem... have you checked the cat yet?

How could I visually inspect the cat? was just gona gut it, cant figure how to test the ECU, and I dunno how to test the injectors. Both my coil and TPS tested bad, coil had higher resistance by a fair whack, and TPS tests good with throttle wide open, but with throttle at idle position, doesnt, so i figure it wont affect it at full throttle. Seems like I should get a new coil though haha....Gona still gut the cat too, then as I said move on to ECU and injectors. Still have to change the fuel filter....

a gutted cat can actauly reduce power, if it was clogged it will still be a huge improvement but the strange shape of the cats bodys dosnt flow well if gutted. A high flow cat vs no cat on a civic dynoed a 1 hp gain, vs about 4 hp gain no cat vs stock cat. Id recommend a test pipe vs gutting it, but idealy a high flow cat so we can all breath a little longer : D In the article is where i read about the HP loss with gutting a cat (that sounds wrong). If your coil is testing poorly, its a possible cause as well. Dirty injectors are bad thing too, have you tryed runign a fuel system cleaner or two through them?
