Hi guys just wanted to say hello this is my first post hopefully of many.

My question is i'm planning on doing the 3sgte swap out of an st185 into my st162. My problem is that i want to use the gearbox out of my st162 with the 3sgte. I know many will say that it won't handle the power but the reason i want to is because it has recently been rebuilt with new synchros etc so it is REALLY smooth so i figure i might as well use it when i goes just get an MR2 gearbox.

So to the problem. The st162 gearbox has the starter motor mounted under the exhaust manifold on the 3sge and on the 3sgte it is opposite it (i figure to clear the turbo)

So because im getting a half cut i will have the all trac gearbox . So can i remove all the internals and cover from the 3sge gearbox and bolt them to the 3sgte bell housing so this housing has the starter on the right side?

Or i heard there is a way of removing the transfer casing or somehow converting the st185 tranny to FWD?

Thanks alot i greatly appreciate any help

when i looked into this i was informed to...
since teh fe and ge starters spin differently. purchase an fe starter (im guessing the gte one would work not 100% though. and use a hole saw of some sort to cut a hole to mount an fe starter how it would be on an fe. mounts should line up, you may need to shim it to get it in the right spot on the gear. im sure some1 has done it ;p

    Thanks Youds
so you reckon i can just grind and cut the bell housing until the starter fits in? i will have the st185 starter with the halfcut so that should fit in so i wont need the fe starter right?

    thanks

you will need an FE stater because the GE starter is located closer to the flywheel than the Fe starter.

So i can't just just swap all the internals etc from the st162 gearbox onto the st185 bell housing. That way the bell housing will already have the starter on the right side?

you do realize the alltrac gearbox if all wheel drive while the st162 is front wheel. right?

yeh i realise that. i just heard somewhere that the bell housings are the same . so thought i could just bolt the st162 box to the st185 bell housing?

I'm don't think 1st gen and 2nd gen 3sgte gearboxes are direct swaps....but it's probably doable if you have the knowhow and money :D

actually rye, they are, many people on alltrac.net do that. The bell housing for hte st165 and st162 are DEFINALTLY differant. I have my gearbox out of my st165 right now, it was nothing like the one i got out of my 5th gen celi that had a 5sfe, which had the same starter position as the 3sge

    Hi zak062

So are you saying that i can swap the bell housings between the st162 and st185 gearboxes?

im saying that its highly unlikly that you can swap the bell housings. If i still had my 5th gen i would compare for you but as of right now i dont.

Thanks for the reply zak062 thats exactly the reply i wanted now i know. I found a thread about converting the st185 gearbox to FWD using MR2 diff and axles so i am going to try and source down those parts that way i will have a nice strong gearbox.

    Thanks again mate

why not just use the mr2 trans. or if you are racing chris and i are both putting nearly 400hp into 3sfe trannys which have a tighter gear ratio.

yeh i have scrapped the gearbox conversion idea and am going to just get an MR2 half cut that way i get the mr2 gearbox lsd with axles which i will use half mr2 and half st162 axles and the engine will still be a direct swap with a couple of easy mods and wire extensions works out cheaper too, not many people seem to have done the conversion from an MR2 though (maybe something that doesn't work that im missing?)

it's a wiring nightmare. that's all. on the mr2 trans you'll need to sway shift linkage.

You can can modify the 3sge tranny by cutting a hole in the bellhousing. Its a PITA!!! I did it, youll need an st/gt/alltrac starter because they do spin opposite. I have a pic of my old motor in the album.

Thanks 1fstgts that i exaclty the answer i was looking for . i have now decided to get an MR2 halfcut that way i get the axles and gearbox and all. i know it's a little bit more work to put the sw20 motor into the st162 but it's worth it.

    thanks again
