ok....what you should do is try and let it idle and see when you remove one spark lead at a time which cyclinder it is because if its not running on one you will know which one it is... then id recommend swpping an injector from one cyclinder to the other and you will know if its definetly a injector or the cars electrics. and checking again...this will mean that you will know exactly what you need. either an injector, or wiring. if its an injector you need to just get one... maybe someone here will have one for ya.. just put up a post!

Thanks for the replies. Don't have time for a long reply, but we've cleaned out the injectors and got them in. Everything seems to be good, just the fuel regulator hose is maybe damaged (but looks okay), and I need a clip or hose clamp to put there. Time for another Autozone trip :).

    Thanks,

Re: Down to one cylinder, back up to three. Fuel injector is out

I used the cleaner about two weeks ago to try to free the injector. The mechanic decided it was the #2 cylinder's injector. I concluded the same thing pretty quickly. Disabling #2's injector (by taking off the connector) made no difference in performance, likewise taking off #2's spark plug did not make it run rich. The Celica manual states it should be 13.8~ Ohms, so I think the resistance is fine.

    Already done that, thanks :).

So, in conclusion so far, I took out the injectors, found that #2 was extremely clogged, cleaned them all, and put them back in. In neutral, the car felt wonderful. Very smooth, probably more than before the incident. On the road, it felt like after I got it back from the mechanic on 3 cylinders. I haven't tested yet, but it really seems to be on all 4, just noticeably weaker. Driving, it's not nearly as smooth, either. Letting off the throttle jerks more than it did before, and under certain circumstances WOTing in second around 3-4k RPM causes it to kick really badly. What I think could be related is slightly damaging the fuel line going into the fuel pressure regulator, and losing the clip. Initially, it leaked badly there without anything holding it down, so we bought a hose clamp for it which had no leaks while revving up in neutral.

From remembering when my fuel filter needed replacing, the car wouldn't usually go above 4k RPM in any gear, or so I think I recall. This seems more like fuel or air inconsistency than the lack of it. The air intake is not connected as much as it could be, but I don't think it would cause this much trouble, or could it? Maybe the engine needs to just burn off some? Maybe it needs some real gasoline without so much cleaner and ethanol?

Let me know what you think. I've cleaned and reset the spark plugs, too. Maybe I should check the timing? I don't see why that would change so suddenly though. What I don't get is why this car has been on 1 cylinder and then back up to 3 randomly; that's my biggest concern.

Any ideas? Thanks again for the feedback.

    Thanks,
    Teran

hmm ohnoes im still thinking that there might be a small little bit or dirt in that injector still and it might only be sending a dribble of petrol into the intake so it will idle smooth and level but as soon as the engine gets under pressure it lacks capibility to give the right amount... my theory... :D

Re: Down to one cylinder, back up to three. Fuel injector is out

Alright, I think this is the update where I'm ready to sell the Celica (or Celcia, as my girlfriend wants to call her :) ). I wanted to try pulling injector wires to make sure it was on 4 cylinders. It took about 15s of total cranking for it to start, which is really rare (even on 3 cylinders, or less). There was no fuel out the exhaust initially, but some did seem to come out at some point. It seemed like there wasn't any fuel in the system, possibly. I noticed that taking out the #2 injector cable had no difference, which is really weird because we put the injectors back in randomly, so there was just a 1/4 chance of getting the same one. Maybe there is something wrong with the electric connection or valves themselves? I'd think I would see fuel spilling out then though. Of course, it could still be that injector gone bad.

I took it for a short drive with my girlfriend. It was definitely on 3 cylinders and kicked as it did before under WOT, downhill or uphill. I had a couple moments of random fuel starvation, probably because the fuel levels were so low.

Anyways, it's looking pretty grim for my Celica. Curious about getting a mk1 MR-2 or a Miata now.

Let me know if you've got any ideas, else I've got a Celica for sale soon.

    Thanks,
    Teran

there is a special kit you can get to test the current in the wires to the injectors or even just check it with a multimeter and see is it getting the same current as the rest... this will tell you if its wiring or injector issues straight away!!! you should see the volts bouncing when you remove it while running and check them!! drama drama drama

Thanks for the link. That is a *great* deal on injectors. Just, they are higher than the stock injectors. Never mind, actually. Those are 315 cc/min, the manual states 264-328cc/min as nominal. I guess that shouldn't cause any problems? That would be perfect :).

Ah, :-/. They only ship to the UK. No luck for me.

I could look out for injectors, but I really don't know if it was another problem or not. Injectors don't explain why the car went down to 1 cylinder for a while and then back up to 3. Maybe it was just a chance, but who knows. I'm worried that I'll keep spending on little things hoping to fix it, but never get it until I've spent too much. But then again, $45~ and a couple hours to get my Celica working again would totally be worth it.

I did spot http://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/1455958567.html though... it made me really interested in another car :-/.

I should check the injector wires with an ammeter, my current one has a broken fuse though. Maybe a lightbulb would work?

Let me know if you really think it would be worth it to keep going with the injectors.

    Thank you,
    Teran

hmmm.... maybe if you send him a email he might send ya them!! i think keep the celica you have!! i know the car i want to buy next is the volvo c30 http://lukehimself.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/C30-T5-1.jpg i think they look pure aggressive!!! hmmm spitfire... i ownd a tr7 once... loved that car... crappy engine thou!!! loved to overheat!! but still... whicked!!! sad5 i reckon fix what you have and just try and find an everyday run around and then you can to all the jobs to your celica wwithout worrying when its done!!!

i would say about it going down and up... the ecu could have just got a shock when it lost one cyclinder and everything went crazy.... if you check the current and know its getting what it needs its defo an injector... thats all you can do... ur tank is low soooo lots of dirt could be swimming around in there... but i think go with injector... if you have a stethascope you can check to c is it opening or not too!!! if the current is strong enough! :D

Re: Down to one cylinder, back up to three. Fuel injector is out

    Hey,

I saw one of those C30s a couple months ago and made sure I remembered the model so I could check it out on Wikipedia; I really liked it :).

You might be right about the ECU going haywire when the cylinder went out. Actually, the mechanic did get the car back up to 3 cylinders after cleaning the battery posts, which would imply disconnecting the ECU. That sounds really plausible, thanks :).

If that injector was opening and it was another issue, I'd probably have a big mess of fuel under the car. Only potential for error is the wiring or the injector, so I should take a look for sure.

The previous owners recently replaced the injectors before I bought the Celica, so I'm worried with how they got clogged again. I know that the previous fuel filter did not fit properly and was definitely not OEM, do you think that might be why the original injectors and mine got clogged? I'm also getting a sound in the engine bay that sounds very close to a hard drive, I can also hear it in the cabin. Only started hearing it since I took out the injectors and cleaned them. Also not sure if my return fuel hose would survive another disconnection :-(. It's pretty beat up.

I did find these injectors, they look like strong possibilities :). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-S ... ccessories

I also got an evil and probably dangerous idea of putting #1's wiring (injector and spark) on #2, I don't think it would do much much good though :p. Tempting just to try and see what happens though.

    Thanks,
    Teran

Re: Down to one cylinder, back up to three. Fuel injector is out

a dirty filter is easily the cause of that so it is, thats the reason its there in the first place so if it got clogged and was of crap quality its sure to let dirt in!! you should sort that return pipe while ur at it... go to a breakers and get one.... there cheap... them injectors seem pretty ok!!! but send your man a email just to see how they are and will they fit and if they dont can you return! you never know, he might have celica injectors too if hes a breaker???

the c30 are pretty cool, id have to go with the 2.5 turbo t5 model thou for defo!!! :D

swapping cables will only end up blowing something... they run on the timing so you will burn the valves and it will run and miss and can potentionally detonante... ( not good ) but im pretty sure you have injector trouble!!! even if you go back to the mechanic and ask him to check the wiring for you he might be able to tell you if its the injector or the wiring... and he probly wont charge much just to tell ya... it should only take him 5 mins!!! fingersx

Who says you don't have crap in the tank! Did you remove the plug and flush it?

Blowing the resistors, lachtot - you may as well blow balloons
They need ultrasonic cleaning and flow testing!!!!!!!!!!

My guess is the prev guy swapped your old dirty injectors with other old dirty injectors
Have you priced new ones? Did he show you the invoice?
Did you even read the injector site I gave you?

How can I flush the tank? I didn't know you could.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they were swapped with old injectors. New ones are like $60-80 each :-/. A bit much for me. I read through the injector site, it was a neat read.

I'll keep checking Ebay, but those MR-2 injectors do look promising.

Re: Down to one cylinder, back up to three. Fuel injector is out

Can anyone confirm if the 310cc (according to another site, although they say 295cc) injectors at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-S ... ccessories would work on my Celica? Getting them cleaned out would cost over $80, I'm definitely hoping to spend $50 or less, unless it's quite certain and worthwhile to spend that much on getting cleaned injectors. I know the O-rings are different sizes though.

    Thanks,

Re: Down to one cylinder, back up to three. Fuel injector is out

So, I got my injectors :). The seller was super quick, they came to my door about 3 days and 16 hours after the auction ended, shipping from California over Thanksgiving weekend. They were packed perfectly and looked great. To my surprise, there were 6 injectors. The seller never stated how many there would be, but a quick glance at the pictures says that there were 6 planned to ship.

It does look like the wiring harness and sizes are somewhat different. These injectors look like they are far better designed, with 4 holes spaced nicely. By some magic though, I need to get these installed and swap the O-ring, and *hope* it'll all workout. But for $30.50 for 6 nice injectors is an amazing deal :). $19.50 left on my budget to get this car going.

    My injectors:

    Wish me luck!

PS: Can anyone explain about cleaning out the gas tank as mentioned by Stig earlier?

Re: Down to one cylinder, back up to three. Fuel injector is out

Ok, I think I'm getting better at this. Got all 4 injectors out without taking out the fuel rail all the way, without any help. The #2 injector's upper O-ring was broken, so I wonder if that may have partially been why the #2 cylinder wasn't firing, although I don't think so.

I compared my new Supra injectors with these. Fortunately, the body is the same shape so it looks like it will all fit. The top bit is identical in fit, the bottom is shorter, but only in the actual injector section, not where it mounts. The O-rings on the bottom seem a tad smaller on the new injectors I have, but I think they are meant to be the same size by specification and will fit the same or better due to being a stiffer material. However, these seem to be peak-hold injectors, as they are right around 3 Ohms; a far cry more juice happy than the stock 13.8~ Ohms. Should I try it as is, or should I put a 10 Ohm resistor in series with the injector? Actually, I think 10 Ohms would create a voltage drop of 10v, giving the injectors about 3v which I doubt would work. Hmm, not quite sure what to do. Either way, I can get the injectors fitted in the car and wait before hooking them up.

One last question. Can injectors not being perfectly sealed on lower compression ratio? IE: If there were no injector, would the compression be almost nothing? Also, I read something saying that Toyotas should only have red coolant, and not green as the green has silicates. Mine is green, so is this true? Might have misread though, I should double check myself.

Should I put a resistor in line with those injectors, or try them bare? Let me know what you think.

    Thanks,
    Teran
