my gauge has been acting really weird. i get really odd readings that arent right. i dont know what the problem is and dont know where to start. but, i was thinking that it might be the fuel sender inside the gas tank. or it might be from the really old wires. just dont know. anything will help. thanks

Dunno Kev, the sender is under the seat and easy to get to
May just be sticking or the gauge is dying

    I'd try the sender 1st

I need to figure how to mod the sender - mine reads 1/2 with like 15L in the tank
which is annoying cuz you know it's near empty

hm, mine is weird. i'd get 200km with the right 1/2 of the gauge, 100km with the left 1/2 of the gauge. then when it's sitting on E, i still get another 75km.

and the whole time, the gauge goes down 1/8 if i step on the gas hard, then it goes up a little when i'm cruising on the highway.

Exactly what I'm talking about, the needles move around but that's not a worry
In the 80's that was considered normal

Your milage suxx?, I get 400-200-50 driving hard with the GE and even more if I take it easy.

Kev - just check the fuel sender movement for now

I had this problem on my first celica (only the first 1/2 of the tank worked) It was solved when I had the tank-top off (under the backseat) and got the sender out.
It looked really clean and I simply moved the sender a couple of times up and down. its a 20 minute job. It worked fine after that.

ive searched a bit online and went to carquest. nobody even shows that part. ill do a bit more searching to find out for sure. probably means not cheap. there are also universal ones so as a last resort that would would work, would just have to find the correct fit.

    Don't think it's needed

Sometimes it's just corrosion on the windings which wears off when you move it up & down.
Sit in the car and watch the gauge move while you do it, you can then bend the rod to get
    a more accurate reading

    sounds a little risky.....

yea, universal would be a last resort.

hmmm. i cant find a p/n anywhere. might have a chance to tinker with it today. ill take some pics when i do. when i pulled it out the other day i found that it moves up and down, but didnt take it apart any further. looks like a pretty simple little guy, so should be an easy fix. i did gain a 1/4 tank on the meter, so now im at 1/2 tank with the light on even when its full.

-my light may be due to the led swap but not sure yet.

well, there is a peice that has a little orange tank connected to it, but im not sure if that is supposed to move either. then there is the one with the floater, which i think is used to measure the fuel in the tank

i belive just the float should move. i think the tank controls the light?

-i took mine all apart and cleaned the conections inside the little steel box. i also re-soldered all the wires just to be sure. no change.

-it looks like the float changes the resistance of the circut as it moves, i think this means that the led is the issue with mine. but wont know till i get the car back. (in for alignment)

-just in case anyone is wondering what were talking about.

-located under the rear seat youll find an "access". this is whats underneath. you cannot access the pump from here. for that youll need to drop the tank.

Yup, the lever works on a wire coil - clean the coil & contact
The foot is fixed and contains the low fuel sender, check the copper wire for continuity.
I suspect yours may be stuck.

certainly good news. i would be iffy if it wasnt

but, i guess i'll just have to go to toyota and get a quote. or call.
