i recently put in a new stereo myself and had to re-wire all the cables and junk. once i got it in and tested it, the front speakers wouldnt work but the back ones do. i double checked the colors of the cables and all that and it was correct. is the most probable cause of this problem me installing the stereo? (not doing a good job) or is it possible that the speakers are bad or some other issue?
id pull the two front speakers out and test them. if there good you have a break in the wiring somewhere.
is it easy to pull them out? is was looking at them when i was trying to figure it out before and i didnt really see and screws or anything of that matter.
the drivers one is easy, look under it you will see the screw, the top clips in. i think the passenger is the same idea.
The fronts are housed within speaker boxes in the dash (the boxes are needed to mount to the OEM dash locations). There's white plastic connectors for the pods that click into the pod and then the wire goes into the boxes to the speakers - I would guess bad connection there if the speakers aren't toast. You can check out my pics if you want. Keep in mind I did a custom mount job as it's noway stock anymore but the housing boxes themselves -k viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1023&start=40
alright, i got the speakers out and noticed they werent connected to anything on the back. i found the connection for the right front one and tested it but no luck. is there another way i could test these speakers to see what the problem is? here are pics. http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z197/vipersrage/Car/
i guess i dont have speakers haha. the pictures you see are right after i pulled em out, and thats all that was in there. i guess the next step is what speakers can i buy that will work there.
4" set, just depends on how much $ you want to spend: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ac799TWReV ... r+Speakers
yes a set is two speakers. And I may be wrong...its been a while since I've had the stock boxes out but I thought they were 3.5" and 4" would be a real pita to fit
Schmoot is correct, 3 1/2" IS the stock size for the fronts. Buy 3 1/2's if you want to play it safe, just don't buy a crappy set. You'll regret it after a year when their blown. Sorry, I think I said 4" since all the sets I've had were 4"s I can't remember exactly what I had to do to fit them if anything - maybe just use new mounting holes in the pods? I know is wasn't difficult, I managed to fit 2 sets in the pods LOL! You can look at the 1st page in my thread - the dual sets of 4"s mounted (I don't recommend the PowerBass brand) -K
so if i dont want to mess around with modding the pods i should just go with a 3 1/2" set? what are some good brands?
bostons, infinity, polk, alpine, JL audio, clarion - in no particuliar order. I personally stay away from sony, kenwood, pioneer, jensen/audiovox and any random never-heard-of-brand. Obviously, there's major price range differences - find something that's going to last which is within your budget. -K
just got a 4" set of bostons installed by a local stereo store. they mounted the speakers right into the dash, they didnt use the pods that were originally in there. so yeah im pretty satisfied.
Cool, Bostons will sound great and last a really long time. My old 6" Bostons were 15yrs old before the voice coils wore out! -K
the bass reflex is now f*cked up without the pods. I had 4" without and now small ones in the pod and it sounds a lot better. Hope you didn't throw them away as you will want them back in a while .
Stock cars without pods had 4" Fijutsu 10, speakers (15W RMS, #SA-1272B) Stock cars with pods had 3,5" Fijutsu 10, 3-way speakers (80W (40W RMS), #SG-1048SD1 R) I couldn't find 3,5" here, so the solution was actually quite simple- 1) Take an OLD soldering iron and run it around the speaker box hole about 1/2" away from the existing hole. 2) Keep going round and round till the soldering iron cuts right through the plastic, you can then trim the holes with a stanley knife - CAREFULLY 3) Check the speakers now fit properly, bend the tangs around the box if they stick out. 4) Put some silicone around the holes, attach the wires and fit the speakers. Screw down at least 2 of the tangs. 5) If necessary do the same to the outer grille holder and attach the pods to the dash cover 6) Same goes for fitting 6" speakers in the rear pods TIPS Avoid the temptation to fit 120W+ speakers to a 55W x4 radio unit - it will have very little volume and eventually burn the inbuilt amp. Trick is to "match" the speakers to the radio/amp you want to use... Speaker rating should be slightly higher than the radio/amp output rating, trick is to have the radio/amp rating in the middle of the speaker rating. ie 55W radio = 40W RMS, 80-100W max speaker. 300W 2way amp = 150W p/chan = 100W RMS, 200W max speaker (can be 1-4 way speaker) A 3 way speaker is the same as a 3 way crossover network, a crossover network allows you to spread out your speakers and most are tunable as well More powerful speakers require amps and amps use big power, so if installing more than 1 amp, think of upgrading your battery, wiring and alternator as well. Most speaker manufacturers only list the max rating nowdays, the actual RMS rating is usually 1/2 the stated rating - check with your supplier/read the box If faced with two (ie 80W) speakers similar in price, go for the one with the bigger magnet, bigger magnets give better sound and more volume Don't be conned by fancy brands and prices, often just listening to different speakers will find the sound you want at a reasonable price Good luck
well the guys at the store i went to said the resonators in the pods were shot so they reccommened me getting new ones from toyota (if i could) or just putting the speakers striaght in without the pods. so i decided the latter was less hassle. and yeah i kept the pods i never throw stuff like that away. btw- thanks for all your help guys.
