Electrical trouble

    I have a strange electrical problem with my 4gen.
    The dashboard amber warning light for a defective bulb is on, although that all my bulbs work (in front and rear of the car).
    And the red battery warning light is also on, despite the voltmeter needle is in the safe blue part of the voltmeter.
    The engine starter runs correctly and the battery is brand new.

    This dysfunction appeared suddenly.

    An alternator trouble? What do you think about?

    ^I'd also go with alternator, get it checked out promptly.

    i had this problem... check the connectors on the big plug going into the altenator and check the pins going into it.

    No. No noise at all.

    Today, I checked and cleaned the connectors and pins on the alternator, but warnings lights are still on.
    A faulty regulator?

    hmmmm....intresting.... clean all the power cables and connections...maybe they could be corroded

    check your positive current going to the ecu...from the altenator... the wire might be burnt out...im not sure if our celicas have these but i know some cars do...then check all the wires coming from the atenator beside the exhaust and they can get burnt easy.

    also if you heat shield is missing from the exhaust manifold it will burn up your alternator quite fast. Did you try starting the car and then disconnecting the negative battery cable? If the car dies or the revs drop then the alt is no good.

    This is a quick and dirty way and can definitely fry the ecu in newer cars but it seems to be safe for the 4th gens

    mmmmh.. risky method. And it won't tell me if it's the regulator or the alternator that is faulty.

    Is it possible to remove the regulator with the alternator still on the car?

    I thought the reg was built right in to the alt.

    Yes, it is. But removable.

    Today, I tried to remove it with the alternator on the car. It has been impossible, not enough clearance between the brush holder screws and the exhaust header (or my screwdrivers are too long).
    So, I removed the alternator and then, I unscrewed the brush holder and the regulator.
    I tried to clean them but after reinstalling, the warning lights are still on.

    I also tried to short to ground the F terminal of the regulator (to check if the alternator is faulty as explained in Chilton repair manual).
    Even grounded, the warning lights are still on.
    According to Chilton manual, the alternator is dead.

    Another strange symptom : with the key on ignition position, but engine stopped, the two warning lights (defective bulbs and battery) are OFF and they should be ON. I ckecked in my other 162, they turn on with ignition.
    The Chilton manual says : "if the warning lights do not light when the ignition switch is turned on, check for a blown bulb or fuse". The bulbs are good as they turn ON when the engine starts. And I ckecked all the fuses of the charging system : they're good too.

    I'm going mad. :?

    did you check the battery current? with a multimeter..when running?

    No, I do not have a multimeter. :(
    But the battery is brand new.

    I think that the alternator is blown out and works as a circuit-breaker.
    It's why the warning lights do not lit on when the ignition switch is turned.

    could make sense!! take it out and inspect is all i can say? stri it...it will only take 5 mins when its out and you'll know! :D

    I don't know anything in the alternators. :mrgreen:

    Tomorrow, my celica goes to the mechanic. I'll ask him but I think that I have to buy one new unit.
    :? Not really the good moment to waste at least 250 euros...

    I will seek for an used one.

    In my experience, everytime I've funny warning lights/icons, it pointed to a bad (or dying) alternator.

    It's also my thought.
    Fortunately, this evening, on internet I found an used alternator (and some other goodies). Out of this poor '86 Celica :

    It was an high-speed crash and despite the violence of the shock, the cockpit is intact. Good ol' 4gen Celica.
