My dome light (above rear view mirror) does not working correctly. The lights do work correctly when I open a door and they turn on, but the smaller buttons that turn on either the left or right side do not work.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

I have this problem as well, except the open door light doesn't work and the others do.

Same issue as well. The dome light works manually switching it on but not when the doors open. I wonder if its a door sensor somewhere.

mine works perfectly......there is a sensor on the door-sill itself....its a button that the door hits when it closes...it shuts off.....when opened the dome light lights........check your button for sticking or gummed up......make sure you have your dome light in the right position...... there's three settings....on/off/door......you'll want the door setting....make sure your light bulb is good as well......there's also a fuse on the kick-panel you can check out.....its a 7.5 amp.....when you look at your driver-side panel its the furthest one up behind a plastic fuse panel you can pull right off.....i believe its the third one from the left on the top row.

for the original poster........check your fuses for the dome side lights.....have you checked the bulbs?

-my guess would be that the dome lights are all on 1 fuse.

-id pull it and check the bulbs, then check the terminals for corrosion.

The front dome light (by the mirror) an On/Off switch for that one light. The one in the middle of the cabin has a toggle to turn it on/off/door.

A quick glance at the BGB I have does not show those two lights are connected at all. The '89 I had with a sunroof was wired like this, my '87 I have is wired like this and the '89 I currently have is NOT (due to no sunroof, no 2nd interior dome light).

When you open the door the red light on your door should go on. It's the sensor that works this right? If it is my sensor should be working fine, but the dome light on "Door" setting isn't working. Must be the corrosion?

Cool (and not so cool) that others are having similar issues. Before I go further, I want to say that I have a convertible celica which means I may have a different dome light. However, the wiring should be similar if not the same. Picture of dome light below.

First to clarify, my dome light does comes on when the door is opened. But the problem is that they do NOT come on when the little individual light switches are pressed.

Question: Are there multiple fuses for the dome light? I know there is a 20amp dome fuse in the fuse box next to the car battery. But, is there another? A prior post suggested there's 7.5 amp fuse in the box next to the driver's left foot, but I could not locate a 7.5amp fuse there. I tested all those fuses anyways, and they passed ok.

Another question: There are two wires going into the dome light, a black (hot) and gray (neutral...please correct if necessary). Is black hot all the time?

So that you know, I'm a novice with electrical.

    Thanks for the input.

Looks similar to the sunroof light, anyone has one spare I'd be keen to buy it

In your pic grey looks like the earth wire

I'd check the input voltage but it sounds like the switches need a clean
Check them with a multimeter for continuity in the on/off positions

the 7.5 fuse is located above the kickpanel fusebox........along the driverside kickpanel there are 2 fuse boxes....the one fuse im talking about is in the top one....ill try to remember to take a pic tomorrow when im leaving for work

I went to the wrecking yard and found a celica convertible (actually there were 3). I pulled the dome light.

It didn't work though. It had the same performance/issues as my original, current one.

    Ideas? Thanks.

-stop me if im retarded....white should be the hot, and black the ground. right?

-check the little push button switch at the door. i would think the map lights should come on regardles of weather the door is open or not, but worth a look.

It's the same as a normal dome light cept there are 2 bulbs each with their own switch.

I haven't checked but I think the screws are earth, black or grey is the door and power feeds.

Yes jwagner162, you're correct. I was told a couple times that the black was hot, but I just tested it and it is the gray that is hot. Thanks. I'm not sure as to your second point, but when the door opens the light come on (both bulbs), and the two little switches that operate each bulb separately (map lights?) should come on at any time when button is pressed.

I have a question. Does anyone know how to disconnect/disengage the door open gauge light on the dash board? Hear me out, please.

As I struggle with this dome light, I'm beginning to consider an alternative approach. What if I close somehow the door-open button circuit (in the door wedge), to fool the car that the door's open. That way I could use the door switch on the dome light to turn on light at will. Other ideas going this way include...

    - need to disconnect door open lights on inside of doors
    - dome light will not come on when is opened.
    - and, I would need to disconnect the door open light on the gauge. But the best way how?

    Thoughts? Thanks.

Stig, your correct too, there are black wires leading from the little buttons that ground or screw to the dome light metal structure, and thinking about it now, which is screwed to the car. The black is door, gray is power.

My neighbor who is quite knowledgeable about cars says that I should replace/solder somes electrical diodes (SR1 or something). He may right, but the other dome I pulled from wrecking have the same issues. Still may be right.

    It's working.

Before I explain, please know that I feel both dumb and perhaps worse for more than likely misleading you. The resolution had to do with something mentioned by recent posts, and in particular the phrase "the screws are earth".

This phrase did not make sense to me until this morning which I then proceeded to give myself a little tap of my palm against the forehead. Here's why.

While I was testing the little switches that didn't work, what I was doing was plugging in the electrical connector adapter for the dome light. I was not, however, screwing the dome light into the body of the car. To my little credit, I knew that the ground wire for the little switches were connected to the dome light metal structure, but I did not understand that the true ground required screwing it to the body. Hmm. Of course, the door light would work but because it's grounded and screwed to the body inside the door jam.

I hope all's good with everyone. Wouldn't have been possible without the posts.

And the little switches say, "Let there be light!". )

    Cheers.

    ROFL - "Live & learn" I say

I've had to re-solder wires into all mine as like I said there's something bad
in the metal they used - try figuring that out
