I did a search and it didn't show anything concerning the actual removal and replacement of glass. Anyone know how to do this and is it worth the time or should it be left to the 'professionals'? Oh, and I'm talking about the side, hatch and windshield... Thanks!
Directions are posted online in the BGB section. Side glass is easiest, next windshield and I've never heard of anyone replacing the hatch glass yet, ppl usually just replace the whole hatch, but yeah, can be done.
Turbodog, The thing about replacing the windshield, is getting the trim to flush fit to perfection afterwards. Not easy, might be best to use brand new trims. Being the perfectionist, I got the glass company tearing their hair out at me, cause I kept complaining that there were too many gaps. They got it right in the end, or you could do what Alwayzsidewayz does, leave all the trim off, to prevent rust.
Yip, the trims are a real pain, clips break, trims bend. Putting them back is a joke and the more glue, silicone you use - the more water gets trapped under them If the glass is too high or low the trims won't sit properly either
Wow....I never thought of it that way! I was just figuring I'd grab the intact glass from one of the local scrap cars just in case anything ever happened...deer collisions are a VERY common occurence out here! Though I only know of one occurrence of a deer going through a windshield...yuck... But I also like the idea of having extra pieces if I need them down the road for whatever reason.
Grab extra screens, get the clips and trims for spares as well I had a screen shatter with frost once, it was iced up and like a dofus I poured water on it. I've done about 5 windscreens plus removing them from other cars, I broke the first 2, but it does get easier with practice & it helps knowing you have spares Pay careful attention to the window frames, rust needs to be removed & repaired 1st or your car will disintegrate around the glass
