Hi buddies, We do know all this 4gen's sickness : cracking door checks (they crack on door full opening). Is it enough to change only the vertical axle or is it needed to change the complete door check assembly?
I got an answer by myself today. Between the vertical axle and the check arm, there is a nylon (plastic?) ring. When this ring is worn (common after more than 20 years of door openings), there is a gap between axle and check arm. As the arm is under spring pressure, it causes the "klak" noise against the axle. Unfortunately, the ring isn't available separately from Toyota. The check assembly, yes.... at more than $70.00... each. :? I'm sorry for my poor english, but I hope you will apologize me and give me an homemade solution, if it exists....
I've got the same problem and will look at it on the weekend. Mine doesn't hold the door open either! Maybe a new plastic washer or sleeve is required?
I think this kind of problem is due to a worn check assembly itself. A worn axle sleeve cause only noise.
The pin is totally loose so will need a sleeve or bigger pin Looks like I can unbolt the clamp mechanism and swap it with a good one from inside the door
Yes, you have to remove door panel, then unscrew two 10mm nuts and get the check mechanism out of the door by the inside.
Thanks uncle I will replace the bush with an aluminium sleeve and pull some of the check mech's from the passenger doors at the scrapyard. I think the st171 and st191 Corona's have the identical parts. I've already had to replace the door hinges using those cars
Bought some spare ones today Where the bar has worn away it is easy to weld it up and repair. The bush can be cut from alu or nylon. I will modify these to be even stiffer as I'm tired of hitting other cars & the wind blowing the doors shut etc. The bad news is that Camry, 182, 202, Curren, Apex, Windom, Caldina, 171, 191, Levin all have plastic units which are even worse than ours. Older Corolla ones can be used with some modification of the pin end.
In the sign industry we use aluminum rod to re-enforce the seams on the big banners. A sign shop or aluminum supplier should be able to help, just use washers or bend the brackets for vertical play. I can get nylon bushes made, but these are really small.
