finally got my alltrac running. battery's not charging though. anything other than the alternator could cause this? also, how do i check the alternator? and another problem, fan's not kicking in. what would cause the fan to not kick in? which terminal on the fan plug is the positive wire?

fan not kicking in is the switch at the thermostat... to check the altenator you need to use a multimeter and test the voltage going to the battery when the cars running.

i checked the voltage going to the battery and only reading battery voltage at 12v. i guess i'll just go ahead and buy an alternator.

run over your cables first and clean all connectors before ya go spending!!

Most often it's just the regulator/rectifier or brushes

Check the voltage at that post on the alternator to make sure it's not a faulty wire

Which fan? there are different types, each has it's own fuse and relay.
Pull the thermostat sensor wire & they should come on or connect 12V straight to the fan,
you'll see which way is positive

i went ahead and jumped the gun on a new alternator. no dice. i measure the battery and its only getting battery voltage 12v. i measured the voltage at the terminal on the alternator and still 12v. anyone got any wiring diagrams for the charging system? i checked the fuses and all seems good.

With the alternator turning you should see 14V on the 10mm nut sticking from the top of the alternator?
If not - it's not working

If there is 14V there, it may be one of the large 30-40A fuses near the battery

no 14v on the 10mm stud. i'm gonna exchange it and chk again. thanks

Check your engine bay fuses again - 30A, 40A, 7,5A charge fuse

Those 3 extra wires go to the ignition sw, indicators sw and wiper motor, can't see a problem there
    unless one is shorted

Still though a brand new alternator should put out 14v at the terminal if it is spinning....it is unlikely that a new one would be bad. Try unplugging all the connectors on the alternator and measure the stud with the engine running....maybe its something in your wiring that is stunting the load

i should have the new alternator today if time allows. btw, where are the fusible links located that is part of the charging system? i need to get this figured out. this is the only thing keeping the all trac off the road.

the big alt fuse is right off the positive battery post

i have a feeling it is faulty wiring. i believe there is a few fusible links for the three wires connected to the alternator. i need some wiring diagrams for them if possible. i get 12v at idle but if i rev the voltage drops. can someone help me out with figuring out the wiring. fuses are good. there may be a broken fusible link in the 3 wires that go to the alternator.

If the fan is not kicking in, everything could be fine and that it's simply not hot enough for the temp sensor.

In your 165, if you disconnect the temp sensor at the bottom of the pax side radiator, the radiator fan should come on. It's reverse-wired, so if a sensor or relay fails, the fans will come on to help prevent engien overheating. It's the plug right above the radiator mount in this pic:

thanks for the tip on the cooling fans but i'm still not sure on the alternator problem. does anyone know where the fusible links are for the charging system? or any schematics on the alternotor wiring?

Top left, "100A ALT" this is the fuse box mounted off your battery hold down tray in the engine compartment.

I take it you already checked the harness for chafing

i have but will double check. i just got the new alternator but i still have a feeling its still a wiring issue. from what i understand two of the 3 terminals on the plug to the alternator should have 12v or battery voltage and only one does. i need to identify which wire it is and see where its going. if anyone has any clue where these fusible links are lmk asap. thanks

    Check wiring diagrams posted

Check for continuity as well as continuity to ground on each wire
