Does anyone know where to get a decent aftermarket air intake hose for a 87 3sge. Mine has been replace a few times over the years. I've seen them from MTC but only for the FE motor... Thanks, Vic
fe and ge are different. unless you get some chrome tube thing, i've never seen and aftermarket one. i assume they are discontinued?
Thanks mafix I'll investigate making a fu-fu one out of silicone reducer and alum tube .... For now mines kinda hillbilly
Went ahead and took mafix's advise and gathered up the various parts to make a new one... I'll send photos of the result if it's decent. View attachment 4663
Thanx... It got rid of my slight stumble upon take off. I think the old one was leaking enough to confuse the maf
Thanx Rick, On my 4th gen thread (daily driver in SoCal ) I show the main components: mine were all remnants that i got from a local tuners scrap box... He sold me a 3" alum pipe (45 degree), a 3" to 2 1/2" reducer, a piece of 3" (45 degree) hose, three 3" t-clamps and one 2 1/2" t-clamp for $17, Most of this stuff is readily available at O'Reillys auto parts etc but expect to pay more ...
I ran it a long time in that condition without even realizing it... Over time the stock wire clamps may cut completely thru, plus the bellows get almost invisible cracks. Left alone the car will usually have a bit of a stumble off idle. Eventually leading to a limp mode where it will barely run. My first hillbilly repair was silicon sealer & electrical tape under the clamp (by then replaced w/ a crappy screw clamp). I knew this wax only a temp fix...
Hey, thanks Vic! I will eventually do what you did but I repaired my intake hose using a self-sealing tape called "Magic Wrap". It's a poly-butyl rubber compound that fuses and seals onto itself creating a solid bond that doesn't come apart like regular tape. There's also another product called "Silicone-Pro" which I haven't tried yet but is similar and made from silicone. A Google search will show more details.
For any other Australians on this forum, I found a local place that still carries intake hoses - http://www.sterlingparts.com.au/epa...tPath=/Shops/SterlingParts/Products/NGAC-TY22 $AUD67 + shipping
Good catch for our down under friends Matt ... Be sure to shitcan the factory wire clamps cause they'll eat into the ends over time. I suggest screw clamps or better still T- clamps like on my new se Vic
FAQ on their website says they will. Just had a look at postage costs on the Australia Post website, a package up to 2kg sent via Economy Air (~2 weeks delivery) starts at around $15. $AUD to $CAD exchange rate is just about even at the moment.
