    Ok guys,
Whos using what for ECU's? I need to start setting my pennies aside to pickup my ECU. I have a GEN2 GTE that Im swapping in, and wiring is not a problem for to change and reconfigure.

It been too long since Ive researched these and Im sure things have changed out there.

Looks like so far these are the ones Ive found that are some what drop in.

    AEM

    Haltech

    Hydra

Im open to suggestions, comments, questions, gripes etc. Im kicking myself though not buying my ECU back when I was neck deep in my project years back because it looks like most of them have almost doubled in price... :( But it is what it is, So Im back to the drawing board.

honda ecu and distributor is my current project. working on finding a female gen1 ecu plug to start my jumper harness. it's awesome because it's basically gen 3 electronics with a removable, reflashable eprom chip. full standalone ems for under 400 bucks

lol sean. here is my 2 cents. since i've played with all 3.
aem = worst. i wouldn't spend the money on one.
hydra = great ems, very powerful, user adjustable everything, it's a f'ing pain in the ass to tune and most tuners won't touch it.
haltech = great ems, nearly as powerful as the hydra, gravy to tune, bastard to setup, any reputable tuner will work with it.

Honda distributors have been tested to over 500 hp. They are an upgrade for sure

and the stock 3sg distributor has been over 700hp. no NEED to change it. the only thing that needs to be changed to do this is the stupid ignitor.

not a fan. far too many variables to go wrong. sure it's great for say your car. but it would be a disaster in mine. if you spun you engine upwards of 10K rpm (i'm thinking NA here) and spent the money to mechanically do that safely, would you (and not that i'm saying they are crap) scrimp on a computer? that's where i'm going with that. sure it's great in moderation. just like bacardi. over do it and boom, worst time ever.

honda has an internal coil though. so you can get rid of that complexity. plus if you're over 500hp or so you should be running a legit ems and, imo, coil on plug. i wouldn't even bother with a distributor because i would want full control over spark at that point. not saying that it can't be done or shouldn't, but i just wouldn't

not to be a downer, the honda b and d -series engines that are in that hp range all use hondata and either an msd distributor or a msd coil in their distributor. the ONLY reason toyota uses ignitors is because the tach/injectors/distributor/ecu all use that signal. and the ecu uses it to cut fuel. so an msd box (which most of those hondas use as well) and tach addapter and problems sorted.

hmm. ill take that into consideration mafix. maybe ill just get a good one at some point then if i ever go crazy on the motor im set up already.

-the kid that did my dyno suggested the honda dizzy as a cheap way to switch over to to hondata and use that as a tuneable ecu. i think that was really the point of going with the honda dizzy. doesnt an fe have an internal coil?

yes fe engines do. the reason they are suggesting a honda dizzy is for the way it reads. hondata + toyota dizzy = no work.

ha, i was just making a joke with the fe thing. im still kinda in the category of: the ignition aint gonna make a whole lotta difference crowd. im sure theres variables, but...

-at the track we used to get to vote on weather people that showed up with 10billion amp msd coils could use them in the race. we always let em... not sure i ever lost to somebody with a pimped out coil.

Ok. So it looks like Im going to go with a Haltech. It looks like the platinum 1000 has a pre-configured setup for 3SGTE and it also comes with a start up fuel map.. The only drawback is the closest dealer is about 4 hours from me.
