see the little copper strip right next to the + in the last pic? follow that to the end of it and there is a silver looking end on it, those are fine fine hairs. on mine they had pulled away from the black strip that they make contact with and would vibrate and act up.

Old thread sure, I think it warrants another mention as it's one of those rare occasions to see the inner workings of a 'sealed' AFM, I'v always wondered what it looks like inside

That second picture is not as clear as it could be, does anyone know what those fine hair things are he's talking about, I can't even see them ?

Anyone know of a short video of an Air Flow Meter (AFM) with a CLEAR top so I can see it operating :cheers

no video but i ca explain a bit.

-in the second pic...air enters from the box. this would be the top of the pic. it pushes the flap open, so clock wise from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock.

-as the flap is opened it turns the big black plastic bit in the center of the 3rd pic counter clockwise. its just the pics that make it seem like its turning a different direction. it turns the "feeler" (little thingy by the +) on the end and slides counter clockwise around the black strip. this is an electronic way of measuring air volume.

    Thanx Jon, nicely explained.

Do they EVER need maintenance ? I never seem to hear much about them, they either work or their shagged ?

nope, no maintanance. I guess if its broken it could be worth a look inside to see if a wire or something had come loose, but unlikley.

When they do break it's the solder contacts that need soldering
It's service free and if you change anything there's no way of re-calibrating it
So if you do make changes, be sure to mark everything
