I was on another forums and see that advanceing the timing can make your car faster and etc ,

depending on what my timing is set to what would be a appropriate timing to set it to running on 91 gas ,

will adding a bit more guts etc?

hum, if 91 is your lowest grade of gas you can advance it a good amount. On 87 its possible to advace it to atleast 11 deg, like mine is now. A friend of mine had a civic advanced to 20+ and was still running 87 but its a honda and they operate a bit differently, i dont know if it had a knock sensor that was jsut throwing back the timing but ti was a 1992 i think.

Timing does have a big effect of performance, kinda like adding PSI to a turbo, advancign the timing will have a similar but lesser effect for a N/A car. Theoreticaly you can advacnign the timign will also boost MPG as well. Running 91 I think its prettyacceptable to go past the 15deg+ mark. THe 3SGE responds pretty well to timing advancement, I rememebr someone here got their car dynoed and got a 5hp gain with 1 deree change in the timing from 15 to 16 degrees. I dont think going from 10 to 15 deg will give you 25 hp but I think somewhere in the neighhood of 10-15 atleast. Try driving your celica with 5 degree timing and see how poor the performance is compared to 10 or more. When you set your timing be sure to jump the diagnostic terminals, try going up 1 degree at a time, i would be cautios setting your timing anything past 13 degrees without someone confirming they can run past 13 on 91 octain. If your cylinder wall have carbon deposits, pining is more likly to occure, so running a bottle of carbon cleaner through your gas is a good idea before going far advanced.

Hope that helps somewhat, sorry for the poor grammer, its early :p

    Here's a guide to timing on a 5th gen

    http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/timing.htm

I wouldn't bother running 98, or anything able regular for the small power gain vs big increase in cost. Im pretty satasfied with 11 deg on 87 oct. im sure you can run 15 degrees with a grade fo gas under 98, id liek to say 91 is fine but I dont know for sure as ive never done it.

it blew for different reasons.... it was burning oil and had a few other issues then i ran it dry on a long trip accidentally and the bearings grabbed....

advancing timing is pretty safe within reason. but you have to run high grade fuel

If you fill up with $20 of fuel, it wil only cost roughly an extra $2 for 98.
