As you guys may know I drive an 89 White Lightning 5 speed Manual. However the last month or so when I go to accelerate with a bit of pressure, the car revs will increase then drop, with little to no speed increase, it's like the car is refusing to respond. Extremely annoying when driving up hill as I have to take it very very easy without the car doing it. It only ever happens when more accel is needed, if I slowly, and I emphasise slowly, increase the pressure on accel it won't do it, however by the time I've done it my car has gone from 100 to 80 on an uphill climb, does it on straight roads as well but it's not as annoying.

It almost sounds like a clutch pressure problem, but yet it doesn't. I know I've had some serious power output problems in the past due to vacuum loss. You should check there first.

Start looking for a new clutch plate, thrust bearing, gearbox seal/s and Crankshaft seal
It will gradually get worse till you won't be able to pull away or climb hills.

What I don't understand is how a fading clutch will rev up and then catch. The way I imagine the failure in my mind is that it would start to slip even worse than at first.

Well I'm not sure about it being the clutch, but I need more info

Do you have this problem in all 5 gears or just in 5th gear

It slips, heats up and catches
    Soon it will stop catching

sounds like clutch to me. maybe oil saturated. check by the cover plate for an oil leak between the bell housing and motor.

Hahahaha! fair call, these guys are a shop about a 20minute drive for me, ended up getting a clutch through my mechanic brand new anyway, pick up the car tomorrow :D
Then time to replace all the fluids, new air filter , and replace the leads.
