86 GT-S randomly not starting

Discussion in 'Diagnosis/Help' started by black cat_GT-S, Nov 9, 2013.

  1. So my car will randomly not start. It sat for 2 months and would not start. i tried once a week to start it and all it would do is turn over. I had someone come out and look at it and it started right up for them. it sounds like a simple wireing issue, but i dont know where to start to look for it.

It sounds like it's either a weak battery or more likely a bad starter. The heat under the exhaust will eventually take its toll on it... Be sure to run the small heat shield underneath if you have to change out the starter.

  3. Is there any way to check the starter.. it is at a shop right now and i am pretty upset that they have had it for 3 days and have not told me anything.

So is there any way to check if it is the starter?

In theory it's easy to test the starter by jumping it directly or bypassing the solenoid but a 3sge has the starter jammed up underneath the exhaust mani makin access to the connectors harder...
When mine was giving me fits I could lightly tap on it and it would eventually work.
If it's in a reputable shop they shouldn't have any problem putting 12 volts to it to see if it spins ...

  5. So the car has been at the shop for 2 weeks. The car started every time they tried so they could not figure anything out. If the starter were bad it would not turn the engine over correct?

What other things could be wrong if the car cranks but does not start?

Not getting fuel? See if it will start with starting fluid. If not then it's not getting proper spark. Any mechanic should be able to diagnose it in no time. Maybe the shop it's at isn't qualified to do your work..

    Random won't start

So if it only occasionally won't turn over ie the starter doesn't spin I would suspect that it's either a bad starter or bad battery cable (old stock ones can get a sort of internal cancer that makes them a little greenish or brittle).

Do the good old starter relay. I didn't know it was a common thing that people did until I had this same problem. If it's the started not engaging sometimes.... The wire through the key is carrying enough current to engage the starter solenoid. Use a relay with a better power wire from the battery and use the starter current starter wire to engage the relay.
