The missing wire will be lying on your gearbox right below the sensor, this car has a blue plug.
Look out for broken rubbers like in this pic, if you see any fill them with silicone or water gets in and eats the spades away
    [IMG]

This is the lower speedo cable section that snaps, mine went the other day so I have a pic
    [IMG]

The gen3 motor is a worthy upgrade but you will need to swap the motor harness, ECU and airbox as well, better if you can score the gearbox too

    Manuals

The one to get, ALL the boffs here have one
    [IMG]

Toyota also made heaps of others but they are hard to find, eg

Washing - I don't bag anything, leave the motor running and you'll soon know if you hit an exposed wire, leave it running after to dry itself or go around the block

  2. Thanks guys. So the coolant temp switch was actually plugged in...Just above the switch on the thermostat housing, the wire is cut but the connector is still attached to the thermostat housing...How do I fix that, and why the HELL was it cut? I guess I can strip the wire and find the correct connector to plug into the thermostat? Does anyone know offhand which connector I need?

The owner had 2 amps and a huge sub box in the trunk and a faulty alarm system that he "cut" who knows where, so I bet there's a lot of shady wiring shenanigans. I'm going to delete the amp&sub wiring from the battery to the trunk, and take a look under the dash for suspicious stuff. This sucks, I hate the previous owner. Sorry for asking a ton of questions.

Also you can see here I'm missing a piece of the front lip, just wondering if anyone has a spare one, otherwise I'll eventually get the Kaminari bodykit maybe.

The Haynes/Chilton might get you by. But the BGB is the best thing. If you can pick one up, the do so. I have an extra 88 one if your interested. Dont remember what I paid for it, but make me an offer for it and shipping I cant refuse and its yours.

Depends which plug you're talking about? Always use solder and shrink wrap to get proper connections, none of this electrical tape b/shite around here or we'll find you.

I've seen some almighty wiring f/ups on these cars so this doesn't surprise anyone here
After 20 odd years this is part of owning a classic, one I had, had the heater wiring all replaced with yellow & red wires which didn't work - I spent 2 years trying to fix it and gave up as the JDM's are different and I could never (to this day) find JDM wiring diagrams.
    Don't believe me?

You can see some of the junk wiring I had to cut out and also the ignition wires - he "lost" the key and smashed the ignition lock off too - I had to replace the steering column and have the pics to prove it.

That's why we're here, everybody has to start somewhere

    I have a few - postage?

  5. postage from NZ would probably cost too much lol.

I took pics of the cut wire to show you guys. Any clue how to fix it would be awesome.

    clip slides off?!

Think he cut this to hide an overheating problem? The fans aren't ALWAYS on, they come on when the car is idling for a while.

Thats the oil pressure sensor. To the left where the lower radiator hose attaches to the engine is the thermostat. Theres a wire thats covered in rubber. If the fan kicks in when the car is idling for awhile, its working as intended.

  7. Okay so why is my oil pressure sensor cut? Is the clip supposed to just slide off like that? Do I connect the cut wire to that sensor?

And then I guess the water temp gauge itself is just broken?

You can probably get a new sensor from any auto store and just solder that onto the existing wire. Yes it just slides over the pressure sensor. Theres a couple of things you can check for the temperature gauge.

Heres a diagram of the several components of the system.

    https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-.../AAAAAAAAAZM/Z6rn0pYpkeg/s800/diag_AyFJg1.png

This is a diagram of a 3SFE engine but its pretty close. You want to check the sensors on 16331. Make sure they aren't broken inside when you pull the plugs off. Two of mine were snapped.

As for why its cut? Maybe it corroded off. Its a super flimsy gauge wire.

My guess is it corroded and broke
That connector isn't easy to duplicate, I'd go to the yards and cut one off a scrap car and solder it to the old wire.
    It's a sliding clip which isn't common

btw. I thought I could use a later model oil sensor and wire - it doesn't work, the resistances are different.

pear abck the wire... wrap it around the knob stiking out, done, will do ya until you get a new one

  11. Thanks, I'll have to do this, as there is no hope of finding a 4th gen Celica/1st gen 3S-GE in a junkyard around here. I've got some spare 12ga wire from a head unit install I can use. $57 for a new oil pressure switch :ugh unless I can find that connector at an auto store or try to shove wire in the existing one.

I'll check the connections on the coolant elbow, but they look so corroded in oily gunk...This engine needs to be cleaned asap but I'm so afraid to drive it in this condition...I can't really afford the maintenance that it needs for another 2 weeks. Hm...

A standard female spade terminal will fit over that. Go down to you local auto parts store and pick them up. You may need to modify it bit to make it work, but it will work.

here, il cut one off my parts car for you if you want... im going grabbing bits today anyway

  16. It's cool man, thanks.

Finally did a little work today. Removed all of the amp/sub wiring and cleaned out the interior. It was disgusting, and the stock wheels and tires had at least 10 spiders that came out when I poured buckets of water on them. Wish I had a garage. Renting sucks.

Question: what the hell is this? Emergency hood release if the regular one fails? I don't get it.

It goes through the firewall where it becomes 2 wires, one is cut, and this black wire:

Can I remove this unknown lock for which I have no key?

What I've chucked from the car so far:

Ordering the harness I need to install my radio, then I can remove the other half of the aftermarket wiring.

Actually that looks like a lock for the hood to prevent unauthorized access of the engine.

  18. Interesting! Does your car have this? I've never seen one before. Since I don't have that key, I think I'll just remove the whole thing. I have a feeling it might have been part of an alarm install to prevent a thief from popping the hood to cut the battery. None of my other cars ever had one.

I think your right though I've never seen one.

  20. Well I removed it lol. Engine bay looks a little cleaner without that stupid thing snaking through everything. Think I got rid of about 10lbs worth of junk from the car today. Not bad. Got about a dollar's worth of change from the ashtray too :D

Anyone know which fuse is for the windows? I'm missing the fusebox cover for the fuses under the driver side of the dash. I want to check before I buy some new regulators.
