today i replaced the bottom section for the second time. It looks like its just seizing up the top but is there any other reason this could be happening? my cluster is fine and gearbox is fine. I simply dont get it any input would be good cheers.

Coz your using second hand ones to replace broken ones?
When i had this prob and i had to track down the part i had no option but to get a second hand one coz Toyota was useless at finding the correctly fitting part, at least so i thought until i found out it was actually a Camry speedo in my car, i cleaned it up with spraying a bit of degreaser down it and soaking it in a little to clear some of the built up shit outta there first and my speedo now works but it's a bit wobbly and i think it's bout to snap again, just haven't got round to ordering the right Camry part in for my Celica yet, sometimes we just find parts that can't be replaced second hand. oyu gotta remember that second hand speedo have undergone similar abuse and millions of rotations just like your previous one that gave up.

If however you are buying new ends....Ouch, that must be costly,.....then get the whole length, top and bottom, yes it's gunna be a pain to replace the top part, a Haynes manual or similar breakdown bible will help a bit, but one hard kick in the ass and replacing the whole thing is better than a hundred small kicks over a long period of time if you keep snapping cables, you'll thank yourself later on.

yer second hand ones but the last one was really strong owell. i didnt even bother contacting toyota, they shit lol i might get one made if/when this bit snaps and iv pulled a whole one out before its not really hard if youve got a second person to feed it up as you pull it through the dash.
    cheers

ok, how hard is it to get the old cable out & is it always the cable that goes ?

I have just had mine stop, the toyota guys say it could also be a broken gear in the drive ??

    can anyone assist ?

by the way, is there any mechanics in Melbourne who specialise in doing up ST162's.
I'm finding not many dealers have mechanics old enough to remember them, :)
let alone know how to work on them or repair them. they mostly have younger mechanics or apprentice's these days ?

    WOW thread revival!

pritty simple to get at but fiddly at the same time. it will be the lower section of the speedo cable. jack the car up and get underneath with multi grips or what ever and unscrew it from the gearbox. poke the cable up towards the top of the bay to get access to seperate it from the top section. basically if you can slide the inner cable around its fooked

im your Melbournian st162 specialist lol. but in all honesty what kind of jobs do you need done. there isnt one aspect of these cars i havent worked on.
if your intersted PM me and we can maybe arrange something. look at my nuild thread for credentials lol
