alright so i wasn't really sure where to put this question so this seemed like a good place. i started thinking on my drive home from school yesterday night (when there was a lot of ice on the roads) how this car would do if i wrecked. now the only answer i could think of is that i would most likely die since there isn't any air bags or really any safety equipment to speak of (in my 86 GT-S). that said i'm not planning on crashing or anything stupid but it did get me thinking. So i was just sorta curious if anyone does actually know how these cars did/do in crashes (any of the 86-89 works for me). random i know but if anyone does happen to know, i think it would be interesting to know.

    thanks guys

Their a hell of a lot safer than that new smart car and I would say at least as safe as a new Yaris. If you want safe you get a hummer and hope you don't get smucked by a semi. It is a heavier older car so if your hitting a yaris you'll probably do better......

Their is probably some sort of crash test data out their somewhere if they did crash testing 20 years ago?

Older car's are almost safer IMO because they're not built shitty like they are now..... Yeah you have airbags now, blah blah blah....

I wrecked my 86 nova by t-boning a minivan, the ENTIRE engine was crushed in, front end crushed, windshield didn't even break. :D

Side impact isn't so great on our cars, you're pretty screwed if you get t-boned, from what I remember, but for front/rear impacts our cars aren't bad. I love not having airbags, I hate those things. Although my seatbelt tensioners are fucked, so if I'm in a crash, my head is going straight into the windshield. Really should get those replaced.

    you guys are lunching.
    from personal experience!!
these freaking cars are bullet proof. we've rolled one and walked away. i've rammed one in the door and only managed to bend the skin and shatter the window. i'm extremely impressed with these cars. a friend ed would be dead if he did not have one.

My friend smacked a lampost in one at speed and while the car was bent, it still drove!!

I think they as tough as old boots, mind I dont wanna test that!

ha ha ya my tensioner are fucked too, they don't seem to be working but oh well. its nice to hear that ppl have rolled these and walked away... well not nice to hear since they did roll the car but u get what i mean, Toyota built them to last/survive kinda thing. thanks guys, i was just kinda curious about it.

the seatbelts in celicas just a weight to lock, if the weight is off center, liek breaking, rolling, crashing ext they lock. they will not lock jsut by pulling fast

Ok. Well, the buckle is busted on the passenger side, and both clips are messed up. And neither belt retracts very well, so I'm going to be replacing the whole thing anyway.

Not a stupid question or anything, but it seems to be a thing on everyone's mind, whom buys a car 17+ years old... If people back then survived without all this crap, we can too. Why would you need to be pampered with soft pillows of air, when the steering wheels work great? lol

uhhhh im gonna say wow to all the misguidance in this thread. i would much rather be in a new yaris than a celica in a head on. they have crumple zones and are designed to move the impact around you through the frame. also add on the fact that rust weakens the car dramatically... and as for the heavier car thing.... theres an episode of fifth gear where they crash a big old volve station wagon into a new hatch..... ill take the hatch ;p

My 88 Alltrac has 1 foot of crumple zone in the front and almost two in the back. And then again, I've watched Mafix plow my ATV at a decent rate of speed into the side of one and only dented the door. I'd say its safe enough.

Aside from that. Your not gonna get into a accident with another car. Its gonna be some big wompin ass SUV. I'll take my truck to the car in that fight.

yeah I'd say unless you get something hitting the windows, you'll probably be pretty safe in these things. even with "rust weakening" I tried to mash my foot through the floor next to the rust hole, didn't even move. I've also sat on the roof and it didn't push in at all. And if you crank the stereo, you barely hear it from the outside. Weaker cars rattle like mad and you can hear everything getting through.

hell my 92 doesn't have airbags or abs and I like it that way.

Plus I think these new cars with "crumple zones" just lets them make the car weaker elsewhere. Yeah sure they test for perfect t-bones and headons, who has been in a "perfect" accident?

I disconnected Airbags in my 5th gen I was terrified of it... I was afraid the damn thing was going to explode when i put it in LOL

I feel safer in my Celica than I do in my girlfriends Corolla, which is newer and has ABS. The Celica just feels much more solid and well constructed. And like underscore said, you can crank the stereo in the Celica and barely hear it outside. My moms new Hyundai, you crank the stereo and you could have a block party audio system, without even rolling the windows down.

ive seen that fifth gear episode too, the one thing they never said is if the volvo had been in an accident before hand. anytime a car has had frame damage it will never be the same in a crash. but anyways funny story about a yaris, this was a couple years ago when they were brand new and i had only seen like 3. i was driving my parents truck/SUV and it was icy and snowing. all of a sudden the traffic stopped for no reason and i was able to stop just in time but the yaris behind me couldn't and rear ended me. He ended with two cracked head lights, hood messed up and bumper in similarly bad condition prob cost him $2000 to fix. i got out looked at the bumper of the truck, there was no dent just some blue paint from the yaris which i rubbed with my hand and it was good as new lol no scratch or anything. the moral of this story is i don't care what ppl say, i'd pick my celica over the yaris because it clearly has enough crumple zone for the both of us lol

Woman backed into the back corner of my alltrac, and she tore the ever loving shit out of her honda the trunk caved in the bumper was crushed in and it just looked awfull on her car I was walking out as she was about to jump in her car and run away LOL I stood in front of her car and asked her what she was doing.

She literally tried to drive away before I jumped in front of her car... bitch

I snapped some quick pictures with my digital camera (just got out of computer graphics)

She about shit herself and got out of the car crying bla bla bla she cant have another accident report on her license or she'll lose it and her insurance company might drop here yada yada...

I looked at my car and laughed... I responded with "write me a check for $125 right now to get that resprayed and I wont say shit, I'll even delete the pictures."

I checked over the car before I said that and now got a nice little bit to go toward my "respray the car fund"

It's nice that you got the money for your respray, but I would say any one who is one accident report away from loosing their license is one person who should not be driving on the road in the first place. Can't they just make these people take a cab or the bus?

I'd rather be in a celica than a smart car during a crash, at least the celica has a crumple zone.

My main worry would be running underneath a large truck or semi trailer. That would go right into the windshield and your head.

Fuck that bitch! I would send her all the shit I could have given her. First she disrespected you by trying to hit and run, and all of us with "older disposable cars". Let her go and she might fuck one of us while we are at work or shopping, whatever. If you have the money from her and the information, I would say she never gave me the money(because that would be obstruction of justice), and call the cops and say it cost a lot more to fix, let alone punitive damages! I had some bitch open her car door on my '78 Celica in the parking lot at college while I was inside the car. I popped out of the car and berated her like the white trash she was. I reported her and took the valve stem out of her car after she left. She deserved it. It wasn't the first time this fat ass bitch did this. Don't ever go quietly, fuck em up! This is my 25 cents!

I'll get you a picture of what she did.

Honestly its weak, and I mean weak... smudge of the age old paint its going to cost about 10 dollars for me to respray the bumper cover... but most importantly I don't wish financial buttfuckery on any one... she had about 6k worth of "respectable bodyshop" repairs she was stuck with... had I backed into my spot and she hit my RC Bumper there would be holy hell to pay... I wouldnt have stopped till the insurance company forked out 5k I would have ebay sales listed for that bumper cover 850 LOL all of the stealership prices for parts to that bumper cover and I'd gripe about it being discontinued and you had to pay double to get a used one...

other than that I find in my strange little world, "import collisions/accidents" is an awesome a spectator sport
