It's about that time for me to replace my axles. Any recommendations on which brand to get? Price isn't an issue. So far two that stood out for me were AutoTrust Platinum and EMPI.
They're not the same. Stock 3SFE axles are flanged (bolted on), 3SGE are splined inputs. How does this upgrade work, do you have to make hybrid axles?
correct but the GE axles drop in when you pull the flange from the trans. and the GE axles are a whole better setup.
Ahhh, I see. Just a thought - why did Toyota go through the trouble of creating another axle arrangement for the 3SFE when they could of just used the 3SGE axles? I've only changed axles on the 3SGE and 3SGTE, so I wondered how that worked. Thanks for the explanation
I'm not sure why, having different parts is silly. If I had to speculate on this, the more powerful 3SGE needed a better axel as where the much less powerful 3SFE didn't need it and it could share an interchange part with the 3SFE camrys :roll Thanks Mafix, I couldn't remember exactly what you told me before about the axels
The FE (tulip) type axles were common on less powerful cars - 1S, 2S, 4S, 3S-FE, they are more common and found on nearly all Corona's, Camry's etc. With the GE motor Toyota fitted stronger CV type joints and with the GTE the same thing but different shafts to suit the 4x4 gearbox FE - GE swap is simple but you must swap everything
do the ge axles! i found out just today that they are discontinued though. this was as Kragen [O'reily] and Autozone. so i dont know if you'll be able to do it. made me sad to find out that parts for our cars are slowly going...........
Kevin, are you sure about that? The Autozone site shows them still available. I juts bought a re-manufactured axle from NAPA, so they still have them.
When I put the Red Lady back together in the beginning, I bought new ones at Pep Boys for $39 each + core.... They still make them... P.S. - I figured out how to do the quotes now... :banghead :shock :hehe
thats crazy! i went there and thats what they told me. made my really sad. but now its all good. thanks for the confirmation guys
Forgive me for digging up an old thread... But can someone please confirm what's needed to convert my FE to GE axles (aside from the axles themselves)
therer is nothing wrong with 3sfe axles. the problem is the stupid tiny 6 studs that hold them to the inner flange.
