I added a Turbo to a 3SGE. Trust me its not worth the headaches. When I originally started my projects, swaps were a little hard to come by and figured Id go the add on route. A couple grand later, Im now rebuilding a 3SGTE and putting it in. If anyone REALLY wants to do it, I can tell them how.

    I got also turbocharged 3S-GE :D
Stock ST165 manifold and charger, GT4 pistons and rods. cometic metallic head gasket, ACL main bearings
HKS-valve, fuel enrichment mod at hight boost, Apexi airfilter, Custom made downpipe and exhaust. Intercooler piping and FMIC.
    Turbosmart Bleedvalve.

Needs wideband and new Ecu system so get to work better with boost.
It's running too rich almost all the time..
What sparkplugs do you guys recommend? I use at this time Bosch plugs

that's stock for a 3s-gte, so it should work better with that.

honestly, any bosch plug for a japanese car is garbage

    You turbo setup

Did you have any trouble fitting the turbo because of the starter? I plan on using a similar setup in my st162 coupe but have been told by others on this forum the starter will get in the way of the turbo. Also how much performance increase have you noticed? Thanks for any feedback!

Our local toyota spacialist recommented me NGK Platinum or Iridium sparkplugs for 3S-GE Gen1 85-89 2.0 GTi cause it's stock engine from ignition settings and they cost something over 100e /per set of 4st in Finland.

    Answers to your questions:

If you play are ok with 250hp power and have updated interiors in engine (pistons, rods/bearings, main bearings) maybe intake manifold from next generation 3S-GTE and new clutch that stands newtonmetres and have aftermarket ECU then you should play with Garrett GT28RS Discopotato or Holset HX-35 Super what goes up to 350hp etc (depends what exhaust manifold you use) to increase more power.
But the stock GT4 (ST165) Charger moves car nicely also. I think it's enuff for frontwheel drive car.
In my car pistons and rods, exhaust manifold are used stuff from GT4 with driven ~ 70tkm. Bearings are from ACL and Metal head casket are cometec.
I did not charged it myself so I can't answer what mods they are made with starter to fit GT4 Charger set there.

I have little problems with my 2.nd gear it goes off with full acceleraion and goes badly inside from 3.nd to 2.nd gear. Maybe syncros are going?
If are so then needs get ST202 fwd gearbox but I don't think that people says it's plug n play, nothing really are plug n play even it's front weel drived box.

With high boosts I think it's better go to straight ingnition and remove old coil system and update it and do modifications like people often do on Nissan Skyline RB-motors takes wires from VAG TSI stuff.

If you think opposite I'm up to take advices and update advices :wink

    Why Hello there!

    Hi Greetings from Australia

Great to find an active 3sge + t thread

I'm in the middle of turboing my 3sge Camry - just have to fab up the oil cooler mount, water and oil lines, exhaust and then get a tune.

Good reliable info in this thread

Its pretty easy to do bar the electrical, just takes time getting parts and fitting them

    Kind regards,

    Ryan

As someone that's no stranger to turbocharging an engine that comes stock normally aspirated its not as hard as it sounds. The key to having the engine live under boost is good tuning and common sense. :) Oh and it doesn't hurt to have a stout engine to start with.

My last project was a 2.0l 2003 Hyundai tiburon and I successfully boosted the 100% STOCK engine to 300whp and it lived like that for 3 years before I decided I wanted more power and rebuilt the motor. The ONLY thing I did to the Hyundai motor was regap the stock piston rings for boost. When I tore it apart 3 years later for the rebuild everything was in perfect working order.

The reason why I bring up this Hyundai motor is that the 3SGE has a lot of the same qualities. Even the piston design is VERY similar. The OE 3SGE piston has very nice thick ringlands and a nice large top land. Given a correct gap in the rings I believe these stock pistons would eat upwards of 15-17psi and 250-270whp all day long with a PROPER tune. :)

I'll be testing this theory possibly in the next 6 months or so after my Celica project is done and running properly on E85. I have a VERY cool tuning device from a company called Perfect Power that modifies the injector pulse directly so it gives me complete control of the injectors. :)

Hey I had a question about painting the strut bar do you have to use engine paint??? Cause it gets really hot when driving for a while???

No, it won't be that hot. A simple normal quality paint will do it.
