ive deceided that the 2nd gen is gonna go in and to hell with the 1st gen..But heres my question:

im keeping the 1st gen 5 spd..how do i detach the 1st gen engine from the tranny, usually i would just remove the flywheel bolts from the tranny and they would separate but i took the tranny flywheel cover off and i see no bolts, Do i just unbolt the tranny from the engine by taking the exterior bolts off?? It cant be that easy.. =/

auto you have to remove the torque converter bolts

seriously it took me a good while to get this bitch off. for the first bit the stupid center bolt on the lower shield was holding it on. after that I think it was just the pressure of the weight. few days later I go to pull the tranny out and the passenger axel we were REEFING ON for days flew right out. crazy cars.

Maf..Are those springs, buckets and valve parts i got for my 2nd gen still usable for my 1st gen??..PPPlease say yes

Okay..So bear with me but i have a couple of totally noob engine building questions..

flame me, ridicule me or w/e but i need help . . im going to try to most of this build myself

    1. timing belt
-im going to take the timing belt and tensioner off and replace them...i also wanted to have my cam gears powdercoated red [im going to buy a clear timing belt cover]
Do i just put the timing belt the same way i too kit off?..there are lil "S"'s on the cam gears..Does that matter at all on where they go?

    2.Setting timing after the build
-TDC of piston #1 im guessing?

3.Is there no throw out bearin in our trannys..cuz my tranny didnt have one ?

Most of the rest of the stuff i already know..Im havign a perf [v8] shop do the bottom end rebuild..new rod/crank bearings, seal, freeze plugs, rings, knife edge crank and balance and blue print

Head will get 6 angle valve job, flash [minor port and polish] cleaning..and all oem new other drivetrain parts

Im more of just restoring the celica more than upgrading it but she will have a bit more pep to her also

    * If anyone has any other tips or tricks i should know..Please inform me..thanks guys, I know you will come through for me :)

I'm pretty sure the S's matter for setting the timing.

Timing is set by putting the crank on 0 (which is piston no 1 to TDC) and then lining the punch marks on the cam gears up with the punch marks on the backing plate that the cover bolts through. Also, make some of your own marks with white out or a texta for reference :)

Yeah, you should have a throw out bearing. Your not thinking of the bushing that normally goes in the centre of the flywheel? I forget what its called, but no we don't have one, while most RWD's do I think.

Where are you getting the clear timing cover from? :D
