whenever i'm in first gear and i'm accelerating, when i get to about 5k rpms the engine sort of jumps i guess. like the car jerks really bad, the check engine light comes on for about a second and then everything is fine again then i shift to second. i was trying to avoid doing this because i figured it was bad for my engine, but i ended up doing it again because im a stupid teenager and now theres a rattling noise coming from the engine block whenever i get above 2.5k rpms and it happens in every gear. my dad thinks it might be the cams or the rockers. any ideas? please dont tell me i need a new engine haha.

at 1st i was gunna say check your engine and gearbox mounts. The fact that the noise is coming from the block means more than likely a rebuild or transplant is in order

is there any kind of diagnostic i could try to narrow down what the problem might be?

first off, these cars have no rockers. cam on valve for these. get a stethoscope and put it on the pan, valve cover, and listen for knocks and / or ticks. if you wana test the bottom end, drop the pan and shake the con rods. they will move side to side. but if the move up and down they have a shot bearing, also check your mains make sure it didnt spin a bearing there either. pull your valve cover and check the cams for any scoring. if they have any, junk them. if all the above checks out do a cylinder leakage test. that will find your problem. if you dont know how to do the above tasks just shoot me a pm and ill run you through it. hope this helps!!

"Rattling", do you mean pinging? Has it ever backfired on you? How many miles on the motor and when was the car re-timed/the timing belt replaced last?
Sorry so many questions, but they are important to help ;)

it sounds like metal knocking on metal, not really a pinging but maybe like a hammer hitting solid metal. and i dont think its ever backfired on me. and i dont know when the timing belt was last replaced, but my mechanic did say i needed a new one, i just didnt have the money at the time and still havent had the money to replace it.

Pinging is different, not a rod knock which is what you're describing. Don't drive it unless it's an emergency and def. keep it out of 5k  You could have it serviced soon or replace the entire engine eventually :(

Rod knock or not 5k rpms is a bit much, 3-4 ok for normal driving. Do you have a manual or auto?

its manual, im pretty sure the knocking is there at idle, it just gets more intense the higher the revs

If it stays constant for a few days, check the timing and try putting better fuel
in the tank, injector cleaner in the fuel as well won't hurt

If it's getting worse, it's a bearing somewhere or possibly even a broken piston

the timing as in the timing belt? and im assuming a can get injector cleaner at a local auto parts store?

(ignition) timing is the process of setting the time that a spark will occur to ignite the air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. The belt/cam gears are what keeps the car in correct time. Loose/worn belts or worn cam gear teeth can jump the timing and cause havoc. Setting the correct timing is key and must be done correctly or there will be damage. Cars are typically re-timed every 80k miles or after a major internal engine repair.

Google timing, you will find a more in-depth explanation ;)

update, im trying to get the oil pan off as celic-gt2 suggested and i got it down to two bolts. he said that i shouldn't take off the crossmember and that i should be able to get it off but i haven't been able to. the two bolts left are just too in there. anybody have any suggestions on how to get the really hard to reach bolts out?

haha get a long wrench buddy, or a shallow 10mm 1/4 drive socket. you can unbolt the crossmember, just put a jack on it and lower it down. but thats extra work for nothing lol. if i can pop my pan off in a snowstorm with the crossmember in, you can too lmao....

if your upper mounts are good then the crossmember can come off but be very careful.
