    Thare's a 3S-GE in my hood (Corona GT-R) with a weird problem.

Sometimes it just won't start, pull the coil HT lead and there's nothing. Leave it a while and it starts.

They guy asked me to help but every time it started so I have nothing to go on.

He says it happens when it's hot or cold and there's fuel, everything checks out but something is dying.

He's tried 3 different coils and all do the same - not coil

    Any ideas?

Well theirs really not to many things it could be as its a fairly simple circuit.

The coil gets +12 volts right from the ignition switch IG2 which is a black wire with an orange stripe.
    - the ignition switch may be dirty
    - the 30 amp AM2 fusible link may be faulty

Thats all there is to getting 12 volts to the coil as long as the wiring isn't compromised

Hook up a permanent test light to the +12v of the coil, leave this light installed until the next time
the coil high tension lead is dead. If the light is still on when the high tension lead is dead then we
know the problem is on the ground side of the coil.

The coil is grounded through the ignitor so the ignitor has to have a good ground to the chassis but
the ground from the ignitor to the distributor is controled by the ECU through IGT & IGF so if the coil
is getting +12 volts then it's either the ignitor or the ECU. Of course the ECU gets signals from other
components that could also cause the problem thats why I suggest a test light on the coil so we can
determine which input signal(+12v or ground) is missing.

Test all little components as you can, then go to the dizzy. my dizzy shows infinate resistance between NE and G, contributing to a possible no spark issue.

    Thanks for that
Yes, he mentioned that when it dies there's no 12v to the coil on the 12v line

It did die on me today, I plugged in my spare ignitor and it fired right up - so I thought YAAY but then I plugged the old ignitor back in and it fired up again.

It's very intermittent, so I don't know how long before it becomes permanent. Also the dizzy has a bad oil leak and the oil has also gotten into the dizzy wiring

check the connection to the engine harness from the body harness at the firewall. then check the ignition switch.

Thanks, I'll add them to he list and get back to you
With me working o/t and him in the Navy it's difficult to get together

check the resistance on the wire going to the coil, might be getting hot and spreading a split connection
