    sillica's ST162 5sgte race car

hey guys im from the proud land of aus well the little island they say is a part of it, well anyway bit of story time for you all so sit down grab a pillow and listen in!

Once apon a time i bought a 162 celica for $850 Aus and knowing the history of this car i knew what was ahead, after getting it towed home and a couple of days latter when i had the time i hooked strait into getting the monstrosity apart (First fwd motor i've ever worked one) getting it out was the hard part  plenty of punching things (not the car), anyway got the motor out and i stripped it back to just a block, took the sump off and to come accross no.1 bearing located everywhere in the sump, and not where it should be, after undo ing the rod i pulled it out then pulled the rings of to find that pistons come in 2 peices, well in this motor anyway
    [IMG]

also on further inspection i also came accross a nice crack running down the bore of the cylinder,

after finding and building a new motor running it in, everything working great after about 1,200 km's i have traveled it decides to spin not only a bearing but throw out the thrust bearings as well, i replaced everything hoping it didn't cause much damage, but it threw another bearing 44km's later.

thus resulting in i long period of time off the road! having trouble finding a replacement motor was indeed stressing me out. so i read up on a few sites about doign a 2.2l conversion, sussing it all out i decided to try it out
finding a 93 toyota camry that had been in an accident, getting the motor out of that and just using the bottom end and selling the other stuff, Success!!!! i found one and started my work
    [IMG]
fecked motor on stand and 5sfe on the ground
    [IMG]
    5sfe on the stand
    [IMG]
the choice between injectors 3sge on top and 5sfe on bottow ( i went with the 3sge ones
    [IMG]
head on belt on, all looking good
    [IMG]
    brilliant!!!!!!! it all together :laff:

in the proccess you need to change everything over from the 3sge to the 5s block even crank pully for timing belt, harmonic ballencer, all brakets overthing i say!! also used the 3sge flywheel and clutch cause 5sfe is an 8 bolt crank not 6 like the 3sfe

putting the motor in was a breeze nothing too it just like normal but then comes the tricky part, since it is a 5sfe it also has ballencer shafts in the crank case you can chose to remove them and put a 3sge sump on but they are there for a reason so good to leave them there, the one thing with the sump being lower you must extend the exhaust

once that is done your all set to rip skids everywhere, nah not really but you will be loving the result that such an engine can produce a great nice amount of torqe at bottom end and nice top end pull,

    more to come

well so far with the car the only problems i've been having is bad cv's the engine check light telling me about the oxy sensor, and the wheels scrubbing on when i hit bumps cause i have shagged lowered springs that need to be re compressed to sit higher cause it's a tad too high,
but after saying all of that here are a bunch of picks of my car somewhere on our latest cruise for Oz Celica this weekend.

Hey Sillyca, nice to see others making there way from OzCelica over here too.
So i take it your not having a whole lot of trouble with yout 5S-GE then, still sounds like an awesome mod, iMy JDM Engine still aint goin right but she's almost there, think i narrowed the Prob down. Did you ever get a new Timing Cover?

Yeah i know all about lack of funds and things of sort.
Just one other thing, wasn't there some sort of mod you had to do to fit the 5S block to the 3S Head?
I remember something about you having to grind something, or was that someone else.

now i will just make a quick list of things i have

    Things i have:
    5sge = 3sge ehead on 5sfe block
    new shocks
standard 5th gen - toyota camry oil cooler
    pod filter
    kenwood head unit
    kenwood 1200 watt sub
kenwood 1000 watt mono block amp
    kenwood 220 watt 6" 3 way speakers
kenwood 400 watt 2 channel amp
shortened gear stick ( i didn't hack at it previous owner did)
2 inch exhaust with the cat coverter and one small resinator

    what i am gunna do:
    ct26 with manifolds
    front mount intercooler
    3" mandril bed exhaust
    all track body kitt
    bigger sound system
    fresh white paint
7th gen rims powder coated white
    5th gen front coilovers
    custom made for the rear
    6th gen radiator
    after market microtech computer
complete respray (still pondering on colour)
    adjustable cam gears
    bundles of guages

latter on after runnign a turbo on low psi, i will be making another 5sge with full forged internals fully blue printed

Wait a Sec, Now your going to Turbo this Mother, keep us updated on that, this is gunna be a beast, But what's happening to the old Celica you have, the TA22 i think it was?

ah yes thank you for reminding me, i had actualy forgot about it,

now you can't just put the head strait on you actualy have to grind out just 4 sections in the head to create a constant flow of water cause the 5sfe block have slightly different water ports in the block so to compinsate for that you have to use a 5sfe head gasket and grind out these area's in the head
    [IMG]
thats my effort but this one shows it better

    don't own a ta22 but i do own a Te72 corrolla (t-18 here in aus) that i am going to be putting either a 3sgte or a 5sgte in
    [IMG]

it does look like crap but i ran out of money and had to keep on driving it, but now it is off the road, and i have joined the airforce so i will take both cars up with me and work on the both up there the t-18 will be slow but the celica will be done faster, casue the t-18 is goign to be a complete tack/road car with pretty much all the techy gear in it

i decided to go turbo after the weekend cause i was depressed that cut's (silver 6th gen gt4 group a) just pulled away from me, like my car is fast but his car is like faster but also 4 wheel drive witch i'll buy and all track when i get money but for now a gt2 with massive POWER will do for me

My Bad, get confused sometimes, i spose i coulda taken a second to check the thread but i'm lazy when it comes to anything that's not my car.

but like i said befor i will be turboing this motor to see how it copes

also another thing i forgot, doign this combination of head and block maked it into an interferance fit motor so if the belt snaps then i will have bend valves much, but to over come that you just buy 3sge pistons oversize to the 5sfe bore

Nice, I'm seriously considering a 5SGE for my car now.

But uh, hate to be bearer of bad news: the 3SGE and 5SFE do not withstand turboing well at all. One of the more boost-minded members can tell you the specifics.

i've got a guy here in tassie with a 6th gen with a 5sfe in it with turbo setup it's running 16 psi off a ct20b off stock internals has been for about 2 years, but yeah i have takin into account that they are not really built for it only cause they stock internalys and stuff but i im planning on building another with the tough shit in it, you can buy the 3sgte forged pistons to fit the bore of the 5sfe so im gunn do that and also use after market 5sfe rods that are built for turbo

Hm, perhaps the 5SFE is tougher than I though, if it can withstand over 1 bar on stock internals. Definitely never hurts to have beefier ones though. Good luck, love what you've done so far.

cheers mate took a bit of searching up to get it all together and just a bit of mechanical knowlegde, and a bit of patients all helps you get something like this together

I love the wheels one your Celica. What are they, and what are the dimensions?

Definitely making a 5SGE once I get proper funds together. Have you had it dyno'd? I'd love to see what this frankenstein makes!

nah not yet man still; have to fix a leak in the exhaust befor i get it done but i do intend on doing it, when i have the funds for it, umm im not sure about the rims i knew they are 15's but thats about it atm would have to wait untill i need new front tyres when i take the rims off the car then i can mesure them or when i got a bit of time
but i got the rims on the car so i don't know much about them, but the car is too low atm springs are sagging too much so the wheels cut into the guards so i have tyres that are all cut away
