I had mentioned a while back that my uncle and I were building a gen1 mr2 for lemons. We now have a gen2 Mr2 with the stock GTE to go back in, but we only have a Mr2 trans from a 5s-fe. We want to run this as a track car, can we use the N/A trans on the turbo engine? And I was told we would need to do something with the axles and shift cables?
Any solid info would be great! We want to make a list so we know what we need and how much we have to spend!

Probably Stig or Mafix have this info!

Or you can ask on the mr2.com forum :)

I could, but seeing as they are pretty much the same engines and trans, and I know the people here know what they are talking about! I also believe there are some mr2 owners or swaps from this site!

I have my GTS that is built and I race!

Yes you can use the FE tranny but you'll have to switch driveshafts (the inner CV splines are smaller on the GTE "E" box)
You won't need to change anything on the flywheel or clutch apart from the clutch plate itself (GTE box splines are bigger)
I think the shifter links are the same on the MR2, not 100% sure but the cables may work
or might just need a bush installed.
You need the MR2 GTE tranny, it's LSD!

We are going to be using it for road course racing. I was told by someone that the non-LSD trans is better in the mr2 becuase of the weight ratio on that car. I don't know whether this is true, but I am sure it is lighter. We have the FE box now, so your saying it should be up to the task, right? If we destroy it, then we will have to get a GTE box. We aren't drag racing it though, so hopefully it will be ok!

To clarify though, really all we would need to do is get a set of turbo axles, and swap boots and inner tulips to the fe axles right?

i think he's sayn you can just fit FE inners to the mr2's stock shafts.?

1)Yeah, you can swap the whole shafts or the inners.
2)You need the FE/GE clutch plate
3)Cables will be easy to find & swap if neccesary

Don't agree on the LSD, MR2 has better weight distribution but will still need
all the traction you can get.

I envy you, thats a formidable combo to have anyway

I can't wait! I am actually one of 3 I believe! This will be my first race on a track, other than go-kart, auto-x, and my daily driving! :driving I drive extremely aggressive, with a lot of experience from a van, motorcycle, built Celica etc... over the years.

I know it will still be a lot more fun on a official track, passing and taking corners! :drool5 :drool5

imo rubbing is the best part :mrgreen :mrgreen :mrgreen just protect your tires.

you may drive aggresive, but are you willing to smash the hell out somebody :hehe

you can also master the art of leaning on somebody through a turn, push em just wide enough to graze the wall. they love that. man good times comming up.

My wifes uncle wants to keep the car looking good, so I probably can't intentionally bump. He is a pretty good driver, he has won a bunch of races in his series. He races a full tube chassis MG at Lime Rock, Poconos and places like that, although he hasn't been racing in that car in a few years!

I found out I need to get a full race suit, shoes and a new helmet ! (mine expired this ear) Summit or Jegs is probably the cheapest place right.

Still should be a ton of fun, and he said I will get a lo of seat time in the 2 days of racing! :D

why did i just see this?
3sgte + mr2 turbo trans + chassis work + lsd (quaife would work best in this situation) = awesome.

the 3sge and fe trans won't be enough. and the mr2T trans has the best "e" series gear ratios. just a recommendation.
