Idling issues with my GT-S

When I first turn on my 86 GT-S, the revs spike to nearly 2000rpms, and slowly decrease over about a 5 minute period to around 900-1100rpm, which is still a good amount above what it should be, 750rpm. It will do this regardless of the A/C being on or off, and I have tried adjusting the idle screw to no avail. Does anybody have any idea whats going on here? I know it can't be good for the motor to idle that high when it's not warmed up, and it murders my fuel consumption.

check your coolant first and make sure it's clean.

Its clean. Theres a bit of dirt, but nowhere near as much as my GT had, if you remember how bad that was.

the idle screw does nothing? thats fucked :p

it should always be a bit higher when its cold i thought? everycar i have ever owned has done that....

i think your coolant temp sensor is giving the ecu a false reading. If the computer thinks the car is cold it will compensate by adding more fuel and upping the idle....and possibly also activating the cold start injector

check your air flow sensor also....i had a simliar problem and i had to change and use the 3sfe air flow sensor

I think the coolant temp sensor is fucked, no matter how hard I run the car it never goes above about 1/3 on the gauge. I'll get a new one, if the problem still remains then I'll take a look at the air flow meter.

wow that is odd. mine starts at 1500 and then slowly drops to between 900 and 1100 and then spikes to 1500 again when the ac is on sometimes. i thought 900 was a little high but paid no attention to it really. i need to do a coolant flush i am sure. get some good 'ol toyota red and change the plugs, oil, filter and air filter. should i be worried about it staying at 900 though? temp is always in the middle no matter how hard i drive.

mine idles at about 750 if I start it when its still hot. but if im running it from cold it will want to idle at about 1500-2k. then stick at about 1k at streetlights. I dont theres much to worry about with any of it

Your idle "problems" sound pretty normal as meph said. It runs a higher RPM with more fuel on a cold start when the throttle bypass valve is open, allowing more air into the engine. And sr5, RPM should rise when the AC is on to prevent the car from stalling.

Also there are 2 water temp sensors - one for the gauge and one for the ECU. And seperate thermal switch for the fan as well. And aside from any mechanical problems/ extreme heat conditions/ REALLY running the car hard the gauge shouldn't go over about 1/3 to 1/2.

I am curious about your definition of running a 3SGE hard though.

Yeah seems pretty normal. Mine normally Starts at 1500 RPM and then goes down to somewhere between 750-900

Alright, just kinda irritating. My revs drop when I turn the A/C on though, and I know thats not normal.

I'm used to my GT's temp gauge, which would stay at around 1/2. But then again, the coolant in my GT was more closely related to muddy water than actual coolant.

I read somewhere someone was saying that it was a vac issue. Don't know if that will help us though :?

hey mine does the odd idleing as well,
when i put ac on after the revs have dropped to around 800ish the revs with spike up to around over a 1000
cnt rember how much tho , or it will drop and shudder lol im kind of used of it now tho and dont bother even using a/c umm where is the idle screw , probaly a noob question.
