i want to return my celi to its former glory!

    so i haven't been on for a while but im in need of all your wonderful advice. my 87 gts is sitting two grand shy of 190k miles and its just a yard decoration. i had my tranny rebuilt in the last thousand miles but driving a friend home one evening my clutch release fork bent while shifting from third to fourth at redline. i thought id missed a shift and blown my clutch...
    well needless to say 9k didnt do wonders for my high mileage motor :(
    so alongside some obvious clutch work i want to rebuild/replace my motor instead of buying a honda civic. i wanted to know the costs/pros/cons of each and with a complete tune up if ill se a mpg gain. also will port n polish help...? i want to get it its balls back but get more economy out of her for summer gas prices
    im looking at about only a 2500 budget...
    all advice is GREATLY appreciated :)

    Hey.
    Yes indeed you can restore its glory. Also, its very hard question to answer without knowing more about your own situation. For you, it may be best to buy a civic. For me, I could never save up the amount of money already into the celica. In other words, no honda could ever beat the celica for a deal. but I was given mine for free, you may have paid a lot.

    I'll try to just answer some questions, and be sure to reply with any misunderstanding I may have.

    You will probably not GAIN mpg after a tune up. It should help a bit, but nothing crazy will happen, like an extra quarter tank of gas each fill up.

    Performance vs. economy always. If you are going to save more gas, you'll move slower, if you want to move fast as hell, you'll pay for it in gas, so balls and economy don't really go hand in hand.

    port and polish is mainly something done for a hp gain. so youre economy will decrease slightly and your hp will increase slightly.

    also, for 2500 you can def rebuild the engine while covering all your bases.

    doing work yourself saves money and feels good.

    i am currently rebuilding my engine with less then 1000 dollars.

    Check with Mafix he's got a rebuilt 165 engine for sale. You could remove the 165 intake and put your 162 intake back on.

    I think a rebuilt engine is a better choice than one of these JDM swaps. I don't think the japanese take very good care of their engines since they know they have to be swapped around 50k kilometers.

    And you should still have plenty of money left for the tranny.

    People usually assume you can have a fast car that gets good MPG. Ignoring driving techniques (driving at optimal speed of about 70km/h will boost you MPG pretty high, ~35+ area for me) there are some mods that will increase your MPG and HP. the 4 that im looking are. Header, Injector Balancing, weight reduction and Aerodynamics.

    Getting a header will commonly increase MPG IF you drive in the exact same manner, start giving it and your MPG will drop as it allows more fuel to be burnt. Increasing the low end torque of an engine will allow it to run more efficiently, and luckly most headers increase both low,mid and high end torque over stock manifolds.

    Injector balancing will get the engine running cleaner and smoother, THe o2 sensor controlls all 4 injectors from 1 reading/sensor. If 1 injector is flowing poorly vs the other 3, the engine will detect a lean burn and increase the pulse durations for all 4 injectors, makign 3 run slightly rich and 1 just slightly lean till the reading is within spec. getting them all flowing the same will make sure the right amout of fuel is injected, more HP and more MPG

    weight reduction : i dont need to explain

    aerodynamics: 55% of MPG consumption on the highway is to overcome drag, 16% for tires 44% for cooling system ( i know this adds up to more than 100%, i forget the exact values but it was something like that). curring down drag makes the car faster and more efficient. Ive make a partial belly pan to improve the flow of air travellign under the engine, not enough miles since the install to quantify a result but one is300 owner claimed a 15% hwy improvement.
