Ok so when i bought my car the little button on the end of the wiper assembly stalk was missing, to tell the truth i didn't even know it was supposed to be a button til about a month ago, anyway there was a little round bit of rubber around the brass bit that was the contact point thing for the button i imagine and i tried picking at it the other day coming home from having lunch with the GF, well shit hit the fan, there was a little spark and it all started smoking and the wipers suddenly came on and wouldn't turn off so i shit myself and went to the closest auto electrician, sure enough not open, so i got it home (the stalk was constantly smoking all this time) and disconnected the battery and pulled the wheel off and thee whole assembly, took it apart as much as i could at the circuit board end, couple of the contacts looked greased up and i little black so i couldn't see any damage, cleaned up the points and put it all back together (didn't put the wheel on straight though, oops) and turned the car back on and no smoke, cool, got in it the next day and it smoked up again but the wipers didn't go, well i was running late for work and it's not far so i drove it anyway, left work later on for lunch and got in and the wipers go nuts again, smoke an all that so i pull the wipers fuse and it all stops, but now i don't know how to fix this. and on top of that the last couple days when i start first start it for the day and try to take off it doesn't want to go, coughs and splutters a little and is really against it, so I'm basically crying coz i have no idea what the hell is going on or what to do or who to see about this and all i can do is post up on this site coz all you guys offer brilliant insight and it's what i need right now so PLEASE HELP ME. my mate reckons the car starting problem is electrical, possible computer related but i dunno. Also i believe the ole Celica is running a bit rich as i filled up 37 litres today and from what was a full tank i had only done 250km so I'm sure i have an economy issue also.

If anything about this doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try hard to elaborate or give more detailed explanation.

P.S. Sorry for posting this in two areas as i didn't know which was more relevant a place to put this post.

If in doubt, post in one section, and a mod will move the topic for you. :D

Sounds like for one, you'll need a new wiper switch, if that keeps smoking, it's time to replace it before you have an inferno in your car while you're driving.

Not sure about your starting issue, but 250km for a full tank is brutal...definetely something very wrong there.

WOW that sucks, glad the celi didn't catch fire or anything  No flames right? Sounds like water got in there and shorted it out and you need to replace. Hopefully you won't have to replace harness wires and the performance issue is not related :?

sounds to me that you have a short and the wire overheated and burned the insulation off. . .

i agree with Rye, id get another switch and see if that helps you at all. also, if the button was never there, then it hasnt been used in a long time. the smoke could be burning dust etc in the switch?

ouch, that is bad fuel economy, id check sensors etc. is the smoke black when you take the car driving?

let us kno what the result is :)

Poor gas mileage can be from a lot of different reasons, but one of the easiest things to check is the o2 sensor.

Got all new switch assemble off an 89' model, plugs had different part number on it but the plugs fit in and it all seems to be working fine so all is good.
Stil haven't got round to changing that oxy sensor but, must get to it soon though.
