Well its been a while since I looked at this ...... only 33 wires to figure out. When its all powered up there is signs of life. Unfortunately its not iluminated, you are only seeing some sort of reflection from the overhead flourecent lights. When I turned the lights of to get a picture all the digital stuff disappeared. !@#$%! Everthing does work though, I can switch between MPH & KPH & switch from Trip A & Trip B I tried everything I could think of to get ilumination for the digital display with no luck so as a last resort.....dissasembly I don't know why I was thinking LED's cause that would make a pretty weazzy display.....the upside to that is that Liquid Crystal Displays are normally backlit The culprits. Who would have thought a handful of bulbs were all dead. They probably died one by one causing the digital display to get dimmer & dimmer until the last bulb failed rendering the digital display useless. That was probably the reason this celica went to the junkyard. You have to disassemble the unit to get at these lightbulbs and given the rareity of these digital units I'd bet the dealership probably never repaired one before and wanted to sell the owner a new cluster and with labour probably wanted to charge well over $1000 and the odometer on this unit is around 388,293km so it probably went to the junkyard because of a handfull of failed 12 volt bulbs...... Once the bulbs were replaced. I have also grounded the temp sender wire to verify that that guage works The temp guage blinks when overheated so sometimes the picture gets taken when the temp display is off. The gas guage also flashes on/off but I'm guessing thats because its not getting a signal at all. I found an extra speedo cable so I hooked it up to my drill (this is probably what Mafix see's when he drops the pedal in Nemesis). I don't have any way of generating a pulse or else I'm sure I could get the tach to rev up too. Sorry for the blury picture but at 172 MPH things things are suposed to be blury
so there is some hope for me? When I have some more time (winterperiod or so) I will try it as well .
go dave you see everyone, having no life gives you benefits hahah cant wait to see it in the trac buddy.
Yeah its rough................ Monday I got my junker camry out of the garage and moved my celica in then I went fishing (15 pickerel, 2 catfish) Tuesday & Wednesday I work on the digital dash and other celica related projects Thursday went shopping and then I went fishing again (5 pickerel, 4 catfish, 1 small mouth bass). Tomorrow I'm going fishing again Jealous yet ?
Well probably not ................ but there is hope for your Celica and the chances of it one day having a digital dash. I'll do a summary of what the wires on the 3 plugs are for and any other info I discovered and you can allways pm me with any questions you run into. CelicaSteve my apologies for outbidding you on this item but I allways liked digital displays I even made my own digital speedometer for an old chevy van I once owned.
wow that is nice! i wish i had one of those too! had a chance at one on ebay at one point but didnt take it. now i regret it so
yea sean. i saw it somewhere on this site. its on the cover of a celica handbook. it looks soooooooo cool
Kudo's! You have put a lot of effort and time into this. And let me tell you, that guage = bad ass! It really does look fantastic! Wished my car came digital.
dave, when testing the unit outside the car, which ones in A plug did you hook up to positive and I assume that A9 is the only ground also, i've checked my bulbs and they were also all f'd, so i changed them, but they still don't light up. i've only plugged in all of digital plug A to my existing harness, from what i see in the circuits, i shouldn't need digital B, C and D to have the LCD screen light up correct?
I think you can get the lighting working by grounding A9 & A11 and +12V to either A3 or A12 but not both. One gets 12 volts and the other just gets terminated/unused. When you apply 12 volts to both the ilumination goes out. I think A12 gets 12 volts and A3 is unused. Heres some more diagrams
