Well, the complete rebuild was doing just fine. I did the 500 mile oil change, along with a new TPS, O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor and coolant temp sender unit. Planning on hitting the smog shop tomorrow. Then, heading from my garage back home, around 10 miles out I started getting a loud tapping above 3000 rpm - sounding like I lost oil pressure in head and I was hearing non-lubricated valves. Pulled over and checked oil - all there (at least in pan). I kept rpm below 3000, but tapping caught up to me at lower and lower RPMs. I pulled over and called AAA. After being on hold for 60 minutes and stuck on side of highway at 2 a.m. I turned over engine and limped home, probably screwing things up really bad. Although I replaced the oil pump with the engine rebuild, my first guess is that either the entire pump went bad, or the relief valve got stuck open. Engine never overheated, and if I gave it more gas, it responded in terms of power, but the tapping/banging just got louder and louder. Oil pressure gauge never got off bottom. To best of my knowledge, nothing wrong with gauge or sender unit. Any chance tapping is something else and I didn't screw the pooch with my cylinder head? W/o engine overheating, I thought perhaps I was still getting oil lubricating the lower half and that was keeping it from overheating. If I turn over the engine right now, it's noisy regardless of RPMs. I hoped maybe I just busted something, but don't see how I could bust a timing belt or anything else and still have it respond to the throttle. Why no oil pressure? Why no overheating? I ended up driving it home about 20 miles (at 15 mph) on the highway breakdown lane. Got home around 3:30 a.m. After 15 years, I'm canceling my AAA membership. What to do next? I just spent over a year (and more $$ than I wanna think about) getting it back on the road. Now what?
Drop the sump, remove the rod caps and look for signs of damage Also check the main caps (one at a time) Sounds like you ran a big end bearing - DO NOT START IT AGAIN!!! till the problem is fixed The pump is working - or you would not have got home Never run an engine making strange noises till the problem is sorted, if that rod breaks you will need a new motor (sounds like someone tapping a hammer?) Check my car thread for bearing damage I found recently, these were still running with no noises
SH*T! I just did a complete engine rebuild. Now this? Everything was done completely by the book (BGB). All new internals. Block and head decked, pressure checked, rebored, etc, etc, etc. SH*T, SH*T, SH*T.
Yeah it sux It's happened to me a few times - Mafix had it a few months ago, so you're in good company One or more of the bearings has opened up and allowed the oil pressure to drop, by driving it like that it has probably damaged more bearings The gap/s are now so big a rod cap could snap off at any time
So... I should plan on at least new main and rod bearing caps? Did I probably screw my new crankshaft, too? Maybe I should just start saving to convert to a 3SGTE...
Open it up, take some pics and we'll see what can be done If the crank journals are gouged it will have to come out Usually the Main bearings don't have a problem unless there was dirt in the channels or the filter failed That car must have some love for you - usually it just goes tap, tap, tap, BANG
Kiasis Post subject: Re: cold start idle speed? PostPosted: Fri Jul 24, 2009 12:03 pm Which part of "DO NOT START IT AGAIN!!! till the problem is fixed" did you not understand???? Oh well - another entry for my ignore list Please guys - if you are going to waste everybody's time by making posts and then completely ignoring advice, trying to argue with the helper etc -expect to get yourself ignored in future. It makes no difference how many rev counters you have or how shiny your mags, steering & gearnob are, whether or not your stereo makes 50 000 watts - if you neglect your running gear, the only ride you'll be making is by bus to the bank to beg for a pile of money!
Mafix is correct. The car has not moved or been started since the engine went out. I was attempting to make light of the situation by commenting that my cold start idle and slightly erratic idle were completely cured - just prior to everything going to crap.
i seen that exact post in another part of the site. i wish everyone would just get along. grab a beer and chill out.
It's all good. I should have been more clear regarding the chronology of my posts/comments. I would be frustrated, too, if it appeared that someone was completely ignoring sensible advice from me and others.
Haven't had time and still unsure if I trust myself to not confuse my shotgun for the wrench... :? Maybe this coming weekend.
