Considering changing courses with Jasmine from weekend warrior --> Daily Driver

Should I be concerned about anything?

I think I'll have a fairly reliable road car and can have it track ready in just a matter of minutes. We're going to pick up either a new(er) vehicle and trade in the Mazda or just buy another vehicle.

Jasmine is basically all new. Motor has been resealed, it has like 30-40 miles on the reseal. The transmission is in good shape (I just had it torn down to fix my 5th gear issue). I'm thinking if I do the following, I would have a fairly reliable daily driver.

    Boost controller set to 10-12lbs
-Right now if I get it in it I can boost to 18-20lbs in a heartbeat.

    Upgrade brakes to ST185
-My brakes are in good shape, but I'd rather have the stronger st185 large single piston brakes with some drilled (or slotted) rotors all the way around

    Soften suspension
-It rides a bit stiff for my liking for daily driving

    New tires/rims
-The ones I have are great for daily driving, but I have limited traction if I have to get on it.

Once that's ready a nice sound system I could have a comfy daily driver (except for AC).

No AC in Arizona as a DD? No thanks.

    Other than that, why not?

I agree with the no AC part, but for about 4 years we had no AC in my wife's car. Not that bad really, we grew used to it. Bottle of ice water & some sunblock and we're good.

Their bullet proof......I use Dirty Deeds as a daily driver got almost 4700km on it since the beginning of april (about 3000 miles)

    Dirty Deeds 1988 GTS
    - upgraded dual core aluminum radiator
    - upgraded silicone rad hoses
    - aftermarket pusher cooling fan & original GTS cooling fan
    - 1988 3sgte block and head from my All Trac, no turbo, running GTS ECU & injectors
    - 300,000km on engine, crank and camshaft bearings have been plasti guaged and are in the middle of their range
    - head eats a liter of oil every couple hundred km's
    - all original electronics, distributor, coil & fuel pump are way out of spec but still work fine
    - cleaned up electrical contacts on non waterproof plug ie water guage temp sensor, 2 starter motor connectors
altenator 12 volt post, ground for ignitor, oil pressure sensor
    - cleaned up all engine and tranny ground cable connections
    - disassembled and cleaned the 12 volt battery cable and fuseable link, unbolt everything use a bit of sandpaper
to get good contact surfaces and if you can get some di-electric grease to prevent future corrosion

    I replaced 1 wheel bearing
    AC removed
    Cruise Control removed
    EGR removed
    Charcoal canister removed

Could probably use some new bushings and suspension but pretty much an unmolested 24 year old car
Toyota's don't die they normally just rust away

Since you do have an All Trac if you haven't allready done so I would get 1 of the aluminum dual core rads

    I don't have an alltrac... I wish I did :p

Okay let me re phase that

Since you do have a boosted engine if you haven't allready done so I would get 1 of the aluminum dual core rads and a turbo timer

    I have both..

I have the AutoPWR(ASI) ST165 radiator and a Greddy TT I need to install.

Are you running the GTE pistons? If so how does the engine run unboosted?

Yep just put on 162 intake and exhaust manifolds, injectors and ECU.
I would say it runs okay, bottom end power seems good, mid and high range power is down.
I would say it performs alot like my Camrys 5sfe.

    Thanks, good to know!
I'm rebuilding and upgrading a GTE to swap into my celi, but I can't drive a boosted car legally for another ~2 years while on my Ps ( retarded QLD laws ) and was thinking of either just not installing the turbo and running unboosted if I finish the engine before I get an open license or keeping the turbo and running just enough boost to compensate for the lower compression but keeping it really quiet ( dual stage boost controller, I can just switch to high boost if I feel like having a bit of fun ).

how do you plan on turning the boost DOWN? boost controllers only turn boost up.
    very high maintenance car.
let the suspension break in. thank me later.
wheels and tires are already needed. why wait? lol.

    Oh shit.
Sometimes my logic takes a nap and needs someone to give it a kick to wake it up.
Of course you can't turn boost down. My bad.
Looks like I'll have to think up some way to be able to open the wastegate before enough pressure has built up.

I can always induce a boost leak :p

  16. aaron

    aaron Well-Known Member

Not what I was thinking of :p
I wanted to run low boost to reduce the noise that the turbo makes, not to go slower lol
Stock TD04L is set at 10psi minimum. Not sure how much noise it would make.

Boost cut (IIRC) on the Gen4 3s-gte is like 19 or 20lbs. That's kinda scary (to me). Nothing to Mafix though :p

Just roll the window down. :p

I would say it would be fine, but maybe put some longer freeway drives on it first to see how everything will hold up.

Personally I would just buy a Civic, Protege, Sentra, etc as a cheap DD and keep Jasmine as a fun project.
