It has come to my attention that not all 4th gens had a cup holder. As a matter of fact none of the 86-87 celica's had the cup holder and the 88-89 ST model did not have the cup holder either. Only the 88-89 GT GTS & All Trac models had the cup holder.

In this picture the top arm rest will not allow you to add a cup holder. The bottom arm rest has a flush flat surface between the 2 screw holes which allows for the mounting of the cup holder.

How the cup holder is mounted to the arm rest.

mine looks completely different. the armrest has more of a shape to it. here is now mine looks like.

not as empty looking as yours. mine seems to have more grooves and stuff like that....

The two lid types are interchangable, both are prone to the plastic hinge tearing and the front release clip breaking

The older type is far stronger and you can't swap the outer skin
The newer type is very flimsy and prone to cracking when weight is placed on it, the outer skin can be swapped
    for a different colour
(I've had to re-enforce my lids with pieces of 3mm perspex under the skin!)

Here are the two types together
    [IMG]

Kev, you can't use the older cover (yours) with the cup holder, it needs the extra space under the lid. (see pic)

The cup holders themselves are extreemly brittle and the retaining clips are prone to breaking
which leads to the cup holder falling open and your sunglasses getting flattened when you try
    to close it next

Adding a cup holder is not as great as you would think, check the hinges & clips are OK before wasting your money.
You need to buy both parts for it to work

    That's aftermarket?

How do you change gears without water cooling your CD player?

1st 3rd or 5th never ever hit the tray or the drinks, its incredible. its like just right...as if it was made to be there, even though i guess it is an aftermarket item?

Same here, never seen one on the ST 162 before. Interesting what was said about changing gears not affecting the cd player. These Japs think of everything to the exact spot.

I"ve seen one in a 2000 Corrolla. And it had a combined CD and cassette player. How cool is that!

i guess im just lucky haha, thuoght it was a stock option at first but its not, but whoever put it in there did a great job. only downside is it can only hold cans and other same sized drinks, and it can be irritating cause it blocks my buttons to my cd deck.

I got it on ebay UK.

It's really in a perfect shape. Fully functional push button/folding cup rack.

The late JDM ST162's had radio/tape/CD, TEMS came with one but the CD was busted and when I opened it
there was shiny flakes everywhere (something had de-laminated?) that's it under the early type
    [IMG]

    The early ST182's have radio/tape/cupholder
    [IMG]

Heres the spare 182 holder I have, it's 1/4 din
    [IMG]

OXI - you need to re-enforce those clip tabs with some epoxy - they are brittle and prone to breaking.
Once that happens the swing cannot stay up and gets busted when you close the lid.I have some spare somewhere, must find them and re-enforce them.

Also the lid is very thin and needs re-enforcing as well
    [IMG]

I epoxied the undersides and added some soft plastic to the top (under the cover) to stop it ever happening again
