3S-GE Piston Ring End Gap specs & measurement

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 3S-GE engine and have noticed conflicting guidelines in several of my FSMs-

Does anyone know the correct specs for piston ring end gaps on a 1988 3S-GE ? Also, why does the manual mention checking the gap at 100mm below the deck surface?

I seem to remember seeing a service bulletin about end gap on the 3S engines but can't find it.
