My car is an 88' 3sfe.

I've been having some occasional but now frequent cold rough starts. When this happens the engine is not able to hold idle and then dies. If I rev it up, it eventually idles, though (at first) a higher idle than normal. Another observation (whether or not connected with the same issue) is that when maintaining high speed on the freeway, I sense a little jerking motion or slight loss of power. It's difficult to notice, but there.

A few days ago a mechanic checked out my car and said that a new MAF was needed. He spoke spanish but what I understood was that there was some unnecessary movement inside. I was wondering if I could repair or service the MAF.

Q1. How do you or can you maintain or service a MAF? I haven't found a thread that covers this but if you find one, please send link. Thanks.

Q2. If not the wrecking yard, where or what online sites do you recommend getting a another MAF?

    Ideas appreciated. Thanks.

I got Lucky 5 years ago and found a brandnew one for 1 euro...it was a mom cleaning out her son's room after he left the house. :)

That was masssive luck !! They are extremely expensive new :( ... try to find a used one. I'm sure there are a lot of them out there.

Thanks, I'll begin looking for a used one. There's wrecking yards in San Diego where I live and I'm learning about yards in Tijuana, so there's a chance.

Question. Given the part number of the MAF, is there a way know if there are other Toyota models use that same part?

A story if I may share. Three years ago I did not know how good I had it. In the two large yards in San Diego, there were 4 or 5 of the same models like mine. That is, Celica convertibles! I even pulled a canvas top from one of them.

Now, there is one non convertible in those yards.

Sorry if I sound discouraging, don't mean to. I really like my Celica and enjoy keeping it going. Strong cars. 213k miles and it passes anything going uphill. Hearing the Celica idle is like sound therapy. Ok, enough, thanks.

Thank you for the replies. Will plan to update.

Try using www.toyodiy.com and use the part number search to find out which models came with it.

Your symptoms were similar to mine recently. Check your air intake hose really good looking for cracks at the bellows or under the stock clamps.
Your lucky the FE replacement by MTC is cheap and readily available. I did however have a bad MAF a couple years ago and my mechanic ended up re-wiring the connectors inside. That worked.

Wanted to follow up on my issue. It ended up being a bad 3rd cylinder fuel injector.

This thread did prove informational on where to buy a new or re-manufactured MAF. Thanks.
