Hi all, Lately I been noticing even more noises than "usual" coming from the front end on my daily driver '87 GTS auto. My initial feeling is that its a spun front right wheel bearing (since I had that happen on the left side back in 2012 and had to knurl the hub to make the new one fit tight haha), however first I'm going to replace my sway bar bushings since that will be easy and I know they're shot. My symptoms are not exactly the same as before so maybe I'll get lucky. My question is: are these bushings the same (aftermarket) parts as the ST/GT ones that I can easily find? I thought that the GTS ones would be slightly larger diameter, hence a different number ... If any one knows some various GTS part numbers and mfgs please let me know ASAP so I can turn some wrenches this weekend. So far I've got a few #'s but they don't differentiate from ST/GT to GTS (NAPA #NCP 2652078, Moog #K90531, A/C Delco #46G0582A, Autozone, O'Reilley) (I also need to replace my PS pump in the very near future like a few others) Vic
I replaced my sway bar bushings underneath with the Energy Suspension Red Poly ones. Its been quite a few years, but I believe they came from autozone and they dropped right in. I have a an 89 GTS.
I'll check them out if they're not too expensive ... I was kinda leaning toward stock-type black ones but I'm open to suggestions Vic
Ill have to look through my stack of invoices. Im pretty sure I originally bought stock ones, but Toyota was so vague on their part numbers I dont know if Ill find the correct number for you.
Right, so I want to get some with the correct size to fit exactly on the brackets without being forced or trimmed...
Ok. Heres what I came up with for you. I dug through some really old documentation I had. Found this Toyota Part Number 44815-24020. Being only around $7.00 I would just get them from a dealer to be sure. Although, I looked and some references show it for GTS specific but then others mention ST. So go figure.
Well, those were online dealerships. Not sure if your local one will give you the same courtesy. It took me spending a bunch a money at mine to talk them into a discount.
Went to a couple local dealers (one of which is the largest toyota stealership in the known universe) but their parts changers are idiots.... one guy tried to sell me the whole sway bar assembly. Ended up special ordering the correct GTS ones from my local AutoZone. ... I'll see in few days when they come in if they are the correct ones. They were only $10 per pair (their part #863683) the description said it was for a 1" bar which is close to what I mic'd mine at work. Vic
Installed the new bushes today. They were an exact fit for the larger GTS sway bar and brackets. I lubed inside w/ silicon grease. Put the car on front ramps and it took about ten minutes per side. It handles way better since the old ones were cracked, oil soaked and originals. Unfortunately the weird sound is still coming front the right front when cold, and I fear it's a spun wheel bearing. Vic
Hey Matt The noise is a slight chatter or grinding...sounds kinda rotational; only present upon acceleration or on right turn. I didn't notice any play in the wheels or anything torn or leaking on the axel boots. It mostly goes away after a while but I think I can still hear and feel it faintly even when warmed up. I probably need to investigate a little deeper. .. Vic
Still haven't had a chance to really investigate... it might be f'd-up ("knackered") motor mounts ...maybe...
Finally fixed! Turned out to be two bad motor mounts... The front automatic mount was completely separated and the large main one on the right had a broken stud
