While driving on the highway, my stick shift has popped out of 5th gear a few times. It usually happens when I suddenly take the foot off the gas and/or apply the brake a little.

What's happening? Or needs to be done? Thanks. I have an 88, 3sfe.

Synchro mesh rings are getting toasty. From what I heard the one of the 5th can be replaced without taking the gearbox out, but I'm not a 100% sure of that.

Ok, synchro and engine mounts. I will look into this and respond. Thank you.

Cool, thanks Seank90 for the mount and shifter recommendation.

    Ok...

So I would like to mention an observation regarding the stick shift. That is, while driving in 5th gear, the stick shift moves or rocks back and forth (about a half inch or more) depending acceleration or deacceleration. The 5th gear only, again. Your thoughts?

Concerned about the rear mount, today I jacked up the engine and took a photo of the rear mount (see photo below). If the picture is expanded, there does seem to be some smaller wear and tear cracks. Please advise.

Lastly, if I go the synchro mesh option, I was hoping to get advice on which parts I need to purchase. As per my understanding, I need only to buy 5th gear parts...not an entire transmission rebuild kit, for example. Is that correct?

Below is a link that sells individual transmission parts. My hope is that someone could point to the parts I need. Including another parts site perhaps. Regardless, thanks in advance.

I am planning to take all the parts on my next trip to mexico and have some work done there. Perhaps, the more parts the better, and keep those return receipts.

    Thanks again.

    Hello again.

I need help finding (online presumably) a transmission part called a slider for the 5th gear. The other detail I know about this part is that it's made of iron.

The mechanic mentioned that I needed a fork and a slider. He has a fork, so the slider is what's needed.

I've been looking online but am somewhat overwhelmed. Embarrassed too.

Any help in finding this part is sincerely appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Hello.

    Good luck with rebuild.

The part you are looking for is called the "Sleeve/Transmission hub". The tabs of the fork will ride in a machined notch on the sleeve. The sleeve slides along shaft to lock shaft into gear with aid of synchronizer.

Be careful using any old fork. Often times shift forks are selectable to allow for manufacturer variation of other parts. Meaning not all forks are created equal. Consult the service manual for your car to see if this applies here.

I do not know the part # as I have never rebuild your model manual transmission.

Call or go to a dealer. Will save you time, headaches, and probably money.

    Hello,

    Good luck with rebuild.

The part you are looking for is a "Sleeve, Transmission Hub". It lists Hubs 1,2,&3.

    I suspect:

Sleeve, Transmission Hub 1 = 1-2 shift fork
Sleeve, Transmission Hub 2 = 3-4 shift fork
Sleeve, Transmission Hub 3 = 5th shift fork ***This being the one of interest

Call a dealer to confirm. I have rebuild MTM's just not the model you are working on.

Also, please look at service manual to confirm the shift forks are no selectable. If so, you have some decisions to make.

    goodluck

    Finally got it fix!

It was the transmission mount that was causing the movement and wear on the transmission, particularly the 5th gear in my case. I thought the mount was checked by a mechanic before several steps ensued but here I am to advise checking mounts if your 5th gear coming out.

If I could, I'd like to share a good experience involving a mechanic, the work he did, and price.

After multiple failed trips to a transmission mechanic in Tijuana, I decided to leave the car with the next door neighbor(and mechanic) of a friend I visited in Mexicali.

    He....

    - Replaced the transmission mount (I provided the part)
    - Diagnosed the 5th gear and found that the Hub or Sleeve had been put on backwards by last mechanic.
    - Located and fixed the oil leak which caused the mount to erode.
    - Found and fixed a cv boot problem (bent screw etc), bought end metal part, and replaced.
    - Advised to replace radiator to prevent boiling overflow effect. And it worked.

    Price 50$ plus deserved tip

Before I forget, thanks sincerely for all help.
