Power/acceleration loss

    Hey hey..

So I've been having this issue for awhile now..

Taking off from a complete stop.. the car pulls up to ~3.5-4k revs, before dropping to around 1500.
All power drops out of the car. Pressing the pedal right to the floor has no effect at all..
The car will eventually build in speed until I can happily drive with a nice degree of acceleration again.

This doesn't happen all the time either, the power seems to fluctuate a fair bit..

I'm leaning toward it being a fuel filter issue?

I changed the oil filter recently - turns out it hadn't been changed in possibly 5-6 years.

The power drop didn't happen for a bit. After about 20 minutes of driving, it was back.
It's been fluctuating since. Driving flawlessly, before happening again.

Given the old one hadn't been changed out in so long, is it at all possible the new one is clogged already?
Could the oil filter have caused this? (seems unlikely?)

sounds like fuel filter, possibly afm, how is your cap and rotor and plugs. start with the basics and work your way up. auto or manual?

    Auto.
    Plugs are new.

I'm weirded out by the brief change in power after the oil + filter, but..

Could it be the fuel filter, or afm given the effect of the new oil and filter?

Im trying to imagine what would have been caused by an oil change and cant come up with much. if you have a multimeter you can test the afm and might aswell test the tps aswell. personally i might susspect the tps before the afm, although i always blame the tps when im stumped lol.

TPS signal is peaking at 3.8v, throttle completely open.. is that significantly low?

well i hate to say it but I cant actually tell you right now. Im just starting a remodel on my house and my bgb is packed somewhere... not sure where.

-maybe someone can post the tps/afm diagnostic from the bgb?

oh wow... so i didnt realize we had a bgb thread.......its under donors corner, so im assuming you have to be a donating member...?

    under the fuel injection section. afm=pg 84-5 tps=pg 90-92.

Still having issues with this - just some more information from my searching...

I've changed the rotor, cap, plugs, fuel filter...
Tested the TPS. Checked for vacuum leaks.

While the problem is happening... If I heavily accelerate, the car will pull up quickly, shift, and suddenly drop in RPMs. Pedal to the floor and it'll just happily cruise along at 1500 RPMs.

Picked up on something, though... When the car is driving "good", it shifts through the gears flawlessly.
Ontop of this, overdrive will engage and disengage without fail (I posted another thread about it not engaging).

    Maybe it's an ECU problem?

Well, I've had this issue since I first got the car.. it only really just started alternating between good and bad very recently..
Could it be the ECU if thats the case? Just deciding.. "yeaaaa, I think its about time I picked up my game.. "

You say this only happened after an oil change?

My guess is a crazy gearbox/sensor problem or more likely a bad/blocked fuel pump,
does the problem get worse on steep hills or driveways?

Yea after an oil + filter change.
First drive after the change was perfect.
The sluggish driving came back after about 20 min.
It would intermittently happen over the next few weeks.
Now once in a blue moon it'll drive well for maybe 10-15 min on a trip.

I've changed out the gearbox for another issue before..
Persisted through that, so it's less likely it's the gearbox. Not impossible but..

Fuel pump.. Mm, haven't ever checked it out. Might need to look into that.
And yea, I'd say it's worse going uphill..

Could it react bad like that for years, without failing entirely?
Also.. Taking off from a stop it drives strongly, until it shifts.. That's when the power drops.
given its on the shift, could it be the pump?

Yes, I'd be looking for another fuel pump as they are all going bad after 23+ years anyway.

What you describe reminds me of a bike I had with a blocked fuel tap and another bike I ran on methanol and couldn't get enough fuel into.

It could also be a faulty fuel regulator - but I've never heard of one failing yet

    I'll definitely check into it..

Also I stumbled across this today

Unplugged just under the alternator. What is this for exactly?
Looks to be near the AC? Why would've it been unplugged?

that is for the coolant temp sensor for the fan relay. if left unplugged, your fan should stay on all the time with the ignition key to "on". if plugged in, it should work as normal (turn on at whatever the thermostat opens at)
