    Hey guys,

Just want to know what gear linkage cables match up on a 165? I have a set of 162's and also a set of 185's yet to take out. Before I go ahead and install them, and than possibly find out that they wont match etc, does anyone know if the 162s/ 185s will fit.

I know for sure the 162 cables will fit.
I'd put alot of money on 185 cables working too but have never tried, at worst you'd have to install the 185 shifter with the cables.
    I know for sure 205 cables won't attach to a 165/162 shifter.

So I swapped the cables over. About 5 times now.. :/ The 162 are too lose on the gearbox end. Also because of this, you only can get into 3rd/ and reverse. They don't sit in the holders on the gearbox snug. (have to work out a way of making them tight if I use these) The 185s are too long, est. about 2cm out from the through in the backwards motions. Forward motion seems to be ok. Can't get into 1/3/5.

So after trying both 162 and 185 linkages, having 1 from each seem to nearly fit? The linkage from the 162 which allows movement left to right. 185 linkage that allows movement forwards-backwards, is currently whats in there. Any ideas on how I can fix this up?? So weird. I think something has been dont prior to this, because I'm pretty sure that these linkages should of worked correctly.

Thanks again for you help ST165-2765

You need to make washers or spacers for the 162 cables or just find 165/Camry V6/Solara V6 cables
Please confirm with Mafix as he has done this on his thread

Yer, that's what I was thinking.. Not sure how I'm going to make them yet though.. The other thing I might be able to do is modify the gear tray from the 185? I think if the holes were made to line up with the existing ones I may be able to use both 185s gear links, and use the tray to make up the 2cm. Might be a last resort type of thing though. I guess depends on whats easiest.

See originally there was an alu block made up about 2cm thick on top of the existing gear tray, to add extra height? (Hence why I bought the gear stuff from you STIG) Maybe some other modification has been done to the hooks, making them non original?

I think I have found a shop down the road from me which may modify existing cables, they might be able to make it a tad shorter and to fit properly. If so, I might get the other cables adjusted to fit. Just in case I have this issue again later down the track. Hopefully not, *touch wood*.

So Mafix had this issue as well? I'll have to have a chat, hopefully he'll see this post, probably best to keep it on this post if I can.

Definitely don't like my chances trying to get gear links for a 165.. I really doubt I would, haha. YAY Australia..

Raising the lever was only to create a short shift.

Mafix's gearbox notes/pics got wiped in the crash a few years ago and I've been asking him to re-post it.

If the cable guy can help it may be easier to have them cut and maybe they can fit bigger lugs for you as well.
Dave has somebody making spacers for him but we'd need to make a pattern to have adapters made for the 162 cable/165 box

I'm just going to contact one of the guys who's stripping a 165 and get cables for my MR2 box, but that's a while off yet

Another option (easier?) is to remove the cable bracket on the box and have the holes welded up to take the 162 cables and their clips, ie weld on 2 thick washers
